Heritage and boutique hotels in Kochi

← Kochi

In Kochi a heritage hotel is not a theme but an address. The old Dutch and Portuguese town of Fort Kochi and the spice quarter of Mattancherry next to it are full of colonial mansions, bungalows and warehouses that now take guests, from a 1912 bungalow to a hotel built on the site of a 19th-century shipyard. The choice comes down to three questions: which quarter, how big a house, and whether you need a pool.

Which quarter

Fort Kochi is where almost all the heritage stays are, and the reason is simple: everything worth seeing in the old town is on foot from the door, from the Chinese nets at sunset to St Francis Church and the cafes. Stay here if you came for the waterfront and the history. The trade-off is distance: the airport is 37–40 km away, an hour to an hour and a half by road, and the mainland is a boat ride across the harbour. Fort Kochi

Mattancherry has a few boutique stays in old spice godowns: intimate and quiet, next to the Dutch Palace, the synagogue and the antique rows. Evenings are quieter still, since the shops shut by six. Mattancherry

Ernakulam on the mainland is the practical base for trains, the metro, malls and the airport road, with modern hotels rather than heritage houses. The big waterfront resorts sit on the islands in between, Willingdon and Bolgatty; they are covered on luxury hotels in Kochi.

How to choose: four kinds of stay

All the hotels named here are in the list above, with booking links.

A small old house

Old Harbour Hotel is a Dutch-era mansion by the Chinese nets with just thirteen high-ceilinged rooms around a fountain courtyard. Tea Bungalow, built in 1912, has about ten rooms split between the original heritage chambers and a few newer additions, plus a garden and a pool. For a lower budget, Tissa's Inn is a mansion inn with a pool about a kilometre from the beach.

A heritage hotel with a serious kitchen

Brunton Boatyard stands on the site of the 19th-century George Brunton & Sons shipyard: 22 rooms and four suites, teak furniture, sea-facing rooms over the harbour, a pool, an Ayurvedic centre, cooking sessions and the History restaurant. The Malabar House, a Relais & Châteaux member since 2008, occupies two 18th-century villas facing the parade ground, with seventeen rooms, an art collection and the Malabar Junction restaurant.

Mattancherry and the waterfront

Ginger House Museum Hotel shares a building with the Ginger House restaurant on the Mattancherry waterfront: antique furniture, art objects and an old snake boat on display, close to Jew Town. Fragrant Nature, on the Mattancherry side of Fort Kochi, puts its showpiece on the roof: an infinity pool over the harbour. Bloom Boutique Waterfront is a restored building facing the sea in the heart of the old town.

A night on the backwaters

A kettuvallam is a Kerala rice barge turned into a houseboat. Spice Coast Cruises, from the CGH Earth group, is a private one on the Alleppey–Kumarakom backwaters, with full board and an anchorage at sunset; Aqua Jumbo Houseboat is a more affordable private boat near the Kumarakom jetty. Both are about 1–1.5 hours from Kochi, so they work as one night out rather than a base. More on the water in boat rides in Kochi.

Before you book

Old houses and a small peninsula come with a few rules of their own.

  • Late December books out first — Fort Kochi is full from 24 December to 1 January, with the carnival and Christmas. Book about two and a half months ahead, or stay in Ernakulam and cross by ferry.
  • Ask which room you get — In old buildings rooms differ: Tea Bungalow, for one, mixes original heritage chambers with newer additions. Ask which block, and whether the room faces the courtyard or the water.
  • Check the boats if you will cross often — From Fort Kochi the Water Metro runs until about 20:00 and the state ferry until about 21:10; in the June–September monsoon heavy rain can stop them. Getting around Kochi
  • Heritage on a smaller budget — goSTOPS runs a hostel in a roughly century-old Dutch building in Fort Kochi, and Reds Residency is a family-run homestay in the old quarter. More on budget hotels in Kochi.

Should I stay in Fort Kochi or Ernakulam?

Fort Kochi if you came for the old town and the waterfront; Ernakulam if trains, the metro and the airport road matter more. A ferry crosses between them.

Are there heritage hotels in Kochi with a pool?

Yes: Tea Bungalow, Tissa's Inn and Brunton Boatyard have pools, and Fragrant Nature has a rooftop infinity pool over the harbour.

Can I spend a night on a houseboat from Kochi?

Yes. The houseboats in the list cruise the Alleppey–Kumarakom backwaters, about 1–1.5 hours from Kochi, with meals cooked on board.
