Hostels and budget stays in Kochi

← Kochi

Cheap sleeping in Kochi mostly means Fort Kochi: backpacker hostels in old Dutch-era buildings and small family homestays on the colonial lanes, all within walking distance of the Chinese nets. Ernakulam on the mainland is the practical, often cheaper alternative, close to the trains and the airport road. The question is less the price than which side of the harbour you want to wake up on.

Three areas, three kinds of stay

Kochi is split by water, and that decides more than the room rate. More on each district on the where to stay page.

Fort Kochi: hostels and homestays

Where most of the hostels and homestays are. The Chinese nets at sunset, St Francis Church, the cafes and galleries are all on foot, and the evening means a cafe or a Kathakali show rather than a commute. The right base if you came for the waterfront and the history. Fort Kochi.

Mattancherry: few beds, very quiet

The spice quarter next door has only a few stays, mostly small boutique places in old godowns, rather than hostels. It is worth knowing for the evenings: shops shut by six and the lanes go quiet. Mattancherry.

Ernakulam: the practical mainland

Business hotels and plain rooms near the metro, the two railway stations and the airport road. Less atmosphere, more choice, and often cheaper; at New Year, when Fort Kochi is at its annual peak, Ernakulam is the fallback. Fort Kochi is a 20-minute boat ride away, but the last boats leave around 20:00 (Water Metro) and 21:10 (state ferry). Ernakulam.

Hostel or homestay

The three budget stays in the list above show the two formats Fort Kochi does best.

A hostel, for company and help

Zostel Kochi sits among the colonial lanes, walking distance from the nets and the cafes, with mixed and female dorms, a few private rooms, a small cafe and a rooftop. goSTOPS Kochi is in a building of about a hundred years from the Dutch period, with a firepit, luggage storage, laundry and help with tours and tickets. Both suit solo travellers who want people around.

A homestay, for a quiet room and a host

Family homestays are Fort Kochi's other budget format: a few rooms in a family house, with a host who knows the neighbourhood. Reds Residency is one, in the historic centre, with air-conditioned rooms and attached bathrooms. A homestay suits couples and families better than a dorm.

What to check before you book

A few local details matter more in Kochi than the photos.

  • Air conditioning or a fan — Kochi is humid all year, with daytime highs of 30–35 °C. In the hottest months, February to April, a fan-only room is a real compromise; read the room type, not just the hostel name.
  • Which side of the water — If your train leaves early or you fly out at dawn, a night in Ernakulam saves the crossing. Arriving by train late in the evening, check that you will make the last boat to Fort Kochi, or budget for a cab.
  • The monsoon and the ferries — From June to September heavy rain can stop the ferries and the Water Metro. A Fort Kochi stay still works, but the road round by the bridges is slower and costs more.
  • Dorm type — If you travel alone as a woman, look for a female dorm when you book; Zostel lists one.

When Fort Kochi books out

Christmas to New Year: the Cochin Carnival keeps the peninsula busy for most of December, and from 24 December to 1 January Fort Kochi is full and rates are at their annual peak. Book about two and a half months ahead, or stay in Ernakulam and come over by boat.

Onam (August–September): the largest homecoming of the Kerala year; trains and flights fill first, rooms follow. Lock the transport about two months ahead and the room about six weeks ahead.

A Kochi-Muziris Biennale winter: in the years the contemporary art biennale runs (mid-December to the end of March), Fort Kochi's homestays and heritage hotels are the natural base, since the venues are walkable, and rates rise. Plan two or three days. See festivals of Kochi.
