Day trips from Kochi

← Kochi

The best places to visit near Kochi are mostly on the water and within 15–35 km: village islands, the beach and the oldest European fort on Vypin, and to the north the Muziris sites, older than Kochi itself. Inland, Athirappilly Falls and the Thattekad bird sanctuary, 60–65 km out, are full-day trips. The hill towns in the list below, from Munnar to Mysore, are 90–270 km away in a straight line and belong to another trip with a night or more.

Munnar

High in the Western Ghats, endless corrugated tea gardens roll away into mist, waterfalls and the odd colonial bungalow. The coolest, greenest escape in the south: hill walks, tea estates, and slopes that turn blue with the once-in-twelve-years neelakurinji bloom.

Isha Yoga Center

At the foot of the Velliangiri hills near Coimbatore, a place engineered for stillness: the consecrated Dhyanalinga and the towering 112-foot Adiyogi, Sadhguru's steel face of yoga. Meditation, yoga programs, and one of the largest sculptures on earth.

~130 km as the crow flies

Ooty & Coonoor

The twin Nilgiri hill stations of Ooty and Coonoor run on tea, eucalyptus air and faded English charm, linked by a UNESCO toy train that creaks up through the clouds. Botanical gardens, lakes and viewpoints in the classic sweater-weather escape of the south.

~170 km as the crow flies

Mysore

Genteel Mysore runs on sandalwood, silk and royal pageantry: a palace that lights up with 100,000 bulbs, the hilltop Chamundi temple, and a Dasara festival that still parades elephants. The grandest palace in the south, and the home of Ashtanga yoga.

~270 km as the crow flies

Islands and the coast: 15–25 km

Kumbalangi (about 15 km) was chosen in 2003 as India's first model tourism village, and the idea is that villagers show their own life: canoes through the mangroves, net fishing, coir-making, a fish lunch. A village operator runs half and full days with lunch, from about ₹1,500 and ₹2,000 per person, and homestays take guests directly.

Kadamakkudy (about 15 km) is fourteen islands of pokkali paddy and channels, and a favourite sunset drive: by scooter or car toward Pizhala, or by country boat. October to April is the window.

Vypin Island starts with a ferry from Fort Kochi every ten minutes. The Puthuvype lighthouse, 46 metres with a lift, opens in the afternoon except Mondays. At the north end, about 25 km out, Cherai Beach has ten kilometres of sand with backwaters a few hundred metres behind it, reached by the Ro-Ro ferry or round by the Goshree bridges. Nearby, Pallipuram Fort, a Portuguese bastion of 1503, is the oldest surviving European structure in India, small and almost without signage. The sea is open for swimming from November to March; from May to September it is not.

North: Muziris, about 35 km

Before Kochi there was Muziris, the ancient spice port to the north, about 35 km out.

  • Paliam Palace at Chendamangalam, gifted by the Dutch to the hereditary prime ministers of Cochin, is now a history museum, with the Paliam Nalukettu next door showing how a traditional Kerala household lived. The nearby Paravur Synagogue of 1615 is the most complete in Kerala. Sites are ticketed and usually closed on Mondays; hop-on boats and guided circuits link them.
  • Cheraman Juma Masjid in Kodungallur is held to be the first mosque in India, traditionally dated to 629 CE. Its restoration returned it to the shape of a Kerala house, tiled roof and wood inside. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times, dressed modestly.
  • Chendamangalam's handloom societies still weave the GI-protected kasavu saree and set-mundu on hand looms. Watching is free on working days; ask ahead to be shown the looms.
  • Gothuruthu, an island near North Paravur, is the home of Chavittu Nadakam, a Latin Catholic stamping opera born from Portuguese theatre. It is performed on demand, so arrange it well ahead through the Muziris Heritage office or DTPC Ernakulam.

Temples and a palace on the city's edge: 10–20 km

Tripunithura, about 12 km south-east of Ernakulam and the end of the metro line, pairs the Hill Palace Museum (closed Mondays) with the royal Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple next door.

Chottanikkara worships one goddess as three through the day: Saraswati in the morning, Lakshmi at noon, Durga in the evening. The late-evening guruthi ritual at the lower shrine is its best-known moment. The inner sanctum is for Hindus; others follow the rituals from the courtyard, in traditional dress.

Thrikkakara, about 10 km north-east of Ernakulam, is the Vamana temple most closely tied to Onam (3–15 September 2027).

In the evening, ENS Kalari at Nettoor, about 10 km south of the centre, holds a Kalarippayattu demonstration daily from 7.15 to 8.15 pm, with 24 hours' notice.

Waterfalls and birds: 38–65 km

Athirappilly Falls, about 65 km out, is Kerala's largest waterfall: the Chalakudy river drops about 25 metres in a wide curtain at the edge of the Sholayar forests. A path from the ticketed entrance reaches both the top and the base. It is fullest in the monsoon and quieter on weekdays.

Areekal Waterfalls, about 38 km out near Piravom, runs from June to November and thins to a trickle after the rains; a check dam makes bathing safe, and entry is around ₹20.

Thattekad, the Salim Ali bird sanctuary on the Periyar, about 60 km north-east, has over 300 recorded species, among them the Sri Lanka frogmouth and hornbills. Dawn is the hour that matters, and local guides help. More on waterfalls near Kochi.

The list below: trips with a night

Munnar is about 90 km from Kochi in a straight line, the Isha Yoga Center about 130 km, Ooty and Coonoor about 170 km and Mysore about 270 km. A straight line understates a mountain road, so plan these as journeys with at least one night, not as an outing from Kochi.
