Waterfalls near Kochi
Kochi is flat coast and backwater, so its waterfalls are a drive away. The nearest is Areekal near Piravom, about 38 km out, a monsoon waterfall that thins to a trickle in the dry months. The big one is Athirappilly, Kerala's largest, about 65 km from the city and a full day out.
Two waterfalls, two kinds of trip
Both are on the list below; here is how they differ.
Areekal: a half-day in the countryside
Areekal is in Ernakulam district near Piravom, about 38 km away, fed from the Mannathoor hills. It roars from June to November and thins to a trickle once the rains stop. A rural tourism project added steps, a viewing bridge, changing rooms and a check dam where bathing is safe; entry is around ₹20. Visitors are mostly people from Kochi out for the afternoon.
Athirappilly: the full day
Athirappilly, in Thrissur district, is where the Chalakudy river drops about 25 metres in a wide curtain at the entrance to the Sholayar forest ranges. It is Kerala's largest waterfall, nicknamed the Niagara of South India, and scenes and a song of Baahubali were filmed here. A forest path leads from the ticketed entrance to the top and the base. It is about 65 km from Kochi, an hour and a half to two hours by road.
Vazhachal, next door
Vazhachal Falls is less than 5 km from Athirappilly, according to Kerala Tourism, so the two are usually seen on the same trip.
When to go
Waterfalls here follow the southwest monsoon. In Kochi June is the wettest month, with about 596 mm of rain over 23 rainy days on average, July is almost as wet and August a little less; that is when both falls carry the most water. Areekal only really runs from June to November. Athirappilly is fullest in the monsoon but worth the trip in winter too, when the weather is mild and a light mist hangs over the falls; weekdays are quieter.
The same rains interrupt Kochi's ferries and the Water Metro from June to September, so plan the drive out by road.
Hornbills and birds on the way
The riverside forest at Athirappilly and Vazhachal is the only place in South India where all four southern hornbills occur together, the great hornbill, Kerala's state bird, among them. Nesting at Vazhachal starts in mid-December, and young people of the Kadar community guard the nest trees.
For more birds, Thattekad (Salim Ali) Bird Sanctuary on the Periyar, about 60 km north-east of Kochi, has over 300 recorded species; dawn is the hour and October to March the season. Without leaving the city, Mangalavanam, a mangrove patch behind the High Court, has more than seventy.
