Hyderabad for remote workers
Hyderabad is one of India's big IT cities, and its west is built around work: HITEC City and Madhapur for the offices, Banjara and Jubilee Hills for cafes and restaurants. For a working stay, base yourself on that side, get around by the Blue metro line and app cabs, and come between November and February, when the Deccan is dry and mild.
Where to base yourself
- Banjara and Jubilee Hills. The quiet, green hills of villas, galleries, third-wave coffee and the city's best restaurants, with boutique hotels. Few sights, and everything is a cab ride away.
- HITEC City and Madhapur. The glass IT district around Cyber Towers, with tech campuses, malls and evening food halls. It works as a business base, and the Blue Line (Hitec City and Raidurg stations) bypasses the traffic.
- Around Hussain Sagar. Lakeside hotels in the middle of the city, handy for the whole city.
The Old City around Charminar is for long evenings rather than for living and working. More on districts in where to stay in Hyderabad.
Cafes to work from
The four cafes in the list above, and what each is like for a working day.
Autumn Leaf Cafe, Jubilee Hills
A quiet cafe tucked into greenery, often named the city's most work-friendly: calm rooms, reliable wifi, power outlets and unhurried service, with coffee, breakfast and light mains.
Cove Speciality Cafe, Madhapur
Specialty coffee in the middle of the IT belt, with indoor and outdoor seating, plenty of plug points and a no-rush policy. Smoothie bowls, sandwiches and cold brews; handy if you are based around HITEC City.
Roast CCX, Banjara Hills
Billed as India's biggest cafe, a 60,000-square-foot space built for staying: lots of seating, strong wifi, plug points and serious coffee, with all-day breakfast. Nobody moves you along.
The Roastery Coffee House, Banjara Hills
One of the pioneers of the city's specialty-coffee scene, in a light-filled space with plugs, calm corners and long tables. Single-origin pour-overs and cold brew. It gets busy at peak hours.
Getting around for work
The city is large and the roads jam, so it pays to live near where you work. The metro runs about 06:00–23:00 on three lines for approx. ₹11–69 a ride, and the Blue Line is the way past the HITEC City and Gachibowli traffic; a smart card (about ₹100, non-refundable) saves the ticket queue. App cabs and bike taxis (Uber, Ola, Rapido) start from about ₹100 across the centre, with Rapido usually the cheapest, and autos booked through the same apps have a fixed price before you get in. The airport at Shamshabad, about 30 km south, is not on the metro. Details in how to get around Hyderabad.
When to come for a long stay
November to February is the season: Hyderabad sits on the Deccan plateau at about 530 m, highs are around 29–32°C, nights 15–18°C, and it hardly rains. March is warming up. April to June is the hard stretch: average highs reach 38–40°C in April and May, with heat waves to 44–45°C. The monsoon, July to October, is green, with the most rain in August (about 200 mm) and sudden cloudbursts, so leave extra time for the commute. Month by month in Hyderabad weather.
