Heritage and boutique hotels in Hampi

← Hampi

Hampi's unusual stays come in three kinds: restored village houses in Anegundi on the quiet north bank, resorts built in a Vijayanagara style on the south side towards Kamalapura and the Hospet road, and a real palace near Sandur. The choice comes down to which bank of the Tungabhadra you want to wake up on, and how far from the ruins you are willing to sleep.

The stays, by kind

What each place is, from the descriptions in the list above and below.

Village houses: Uramma Heritage Homes

Restored heritage houses in Anegundi (Uramma House, Peshegaar House and the Uramma Cultural Residency), founded by Shama Pawar of The Kishkinda Trust. Staff are local and profits go back into village crafts and sanitation. Rooms and lanes are village-scale and not step-free, and the houses are few, so write to the trust well ahead.

Stone cottages by the river: Hampi's Boulders Resort

Sixteen stone cottages among the boulders of the Yamini Hills on the bank of the Tungabhadra, with food from the resort's own gardens and walks to small waterfalls. It feels remote, and you depend on the resort for transfers; that seclusion is the point.

Vijayanagara-style villas: Heritage Resort Hampi

About 6 km from the ruins: some 40 villas in Vijayanagara-inspired architecture on about eight acres of gardens and a four-acre organic plantation, with a pool, a spa, dance evenings and village tours.

A sculpture-themed resort: Vijayshree Resort and Heritage Village

Cottages in planted woodland near Malapanagudi on the Hospet road, themed on Vijayanagara stonework, run as a Club Mahindra affiliate, with a pool. A family choice rather than a historic building.

Palace style: Evolve Back, Hampi

Formerly Orange County, near Kamalapura, designed to echo the palaces of the Vijayanagara zenana enclosure, with courtyards, palace suites and pool villas. The luxury end; see luxury hotels in Hampi.

A real palace: WelcomHeritage Shivavilas Palace

A domed palace near Sandur and Toranagallu that belonged to the Ghorpade rulers, restored with jali screens and carved pillars; about a dozen rooms. It sits well outside the ruins, so it suits a stay that combines Hampi with day trips.

Which bank, which base

The north bank (Anegundi) is the quiet side: a working village, paddy fields and the Anjanadri climb close by. The bazaar and the main temples are across the river by motorboat, which runs roughly 07:00–17:30; by road it is a 25 km detour over the Anegundi bridge, and in the monsoon, when the boats stop, that is the only way.

The south side (Kamalapura and the Hospet road) keeps you on the road network for the Royal Centre, the Vittala Temple and the Archaeological Museum, with no river to cross. Hampi's Boulders Resort is the exception: it sits on the river, away from both.

A palace near Sandur trades closeness to the ruins for a historic building of its own. More on the neighbourhoods in Where to stay in Hampi.

Booking around Hampi Utsav

Hampi Utsav (3–5 November 2026, expected) fills the ruins with three nights of concerts and lights, with free entry and public seating at the stages, and rooms and cabs price up sharply. Karnataka Tourism's own advice is that hotels in Hosapete and Hampi fill up months ahead, so book as soon as you know your dates.

If none of these fits

For a simple room in the old village by the Virupaksha Temple, or a hostel among the paddies, see budget hotels in Hampi. The state-run KSTDC Hotel Mayura Vijayanagara, a 21-room hotel by the Tungabhadra Dam near Hosapete, about 18 km from Hampi, is plain rather than boutique, but a simple base for the dam and the railway.
