Budget hotels and hostels in Hampi

← Hampi

Cheap beds in Hampi come in two kinds: the simple guesthouses of Hampi village by the bazaar, on the temple side, and the guesthouses and hostel among the paddy fields across the Tungabhadra. The choice is less about the room than about the river: the last boat crosses before sunset, and in the monsoon the boats stop. The two budget stays in the list above sit on opposite sides of that line.

Where the cheap beds are

Five places to base yourself, from walking distance to the temple to a town 13 km away. The full comparison of areas is on the where to stay in Hampi page.

Hampi village, by the bazaar

The temple side: wake up inside the heritage zone and skip the river crossing. Guesthouses here are simple. Gopi Guest House, a few minutes' walk from Virupaksha in the old village, has plain rooms with fans and attached bathrooms and a rooftop restaurant with temple and river views.

Across the river: Virupapur Gaddi and the paddies

Greener and calmer than the temple side: guesthouses among paddy fields, cushion-floor cafes, mopeds to Sanapur Lake. Zostel Hampi, the hostel in the list, is further out, in Rajapur village near Gangavathi, about 23 km from Hampi by the operator's count: hut-style dorms, a common room with games and a restaurant over the paddy fields. It takes guests aged 18 and over only, and the mood is laid-back.

Anegundi

The older, quieter village on the north bank. The Kishkinda Trust runs six restored village houses here and builds a stay around its craft units, library and gardens; the houses are small, so email the trust ahead. Not the cheapest option, but the one closest to village life.

Kamalapura

On the southern edge of the monument zone, near the Royal Centre. The state tourism corporation's KSTDC Hotel Mayura Vijayanagara, 21 rooms, is a plain government-run mid-range base for early starts; the location keeps it busy, so book ahead.

Hosapete

The town 13 km west, where the trains and overnight buses arrive and most of the hotel stock is. Buses run to Hampi Bazaar all day for about ₹25, about 30 minutes. Practical for a night between a late arrival and an early departure.

The river decides the evening

The motorboat between the banks runs roughly 07:00–17:30, and the last crossing is before sunset. After that the other bank is a 25 km detour over the Anegundi bridge, about ₹500–800 by tuk-tuk. The boatmen take cash only. When the river rises in the monsoon the boats stop, and the bridge detour is the only way across. Details on the boat rides page.

Before you book

A few things that matter more than the price.

  • Pick the side by your plans — Most of the ticketed monuments and Virupaksha are on the temple side; Anjanadri, Sanapur Lake and Anegundi are on the north bank.
  • Think about the heat — Rooms at Gopi Guest House have fans, and from March the temperature climbs towards 42°C. October to February is the comfortable season.
  • Morning arrivals — The overnight bus and the Hampi Express reach Hosapete in the early morning, so ask about early check-in or leave bags for the first day.
  • Cash — Carry cash for the river crossing and small purchases; the boatmen take no cards and no UPI.
