Where to stay in Hampi
For walking to the ruins, stay in Hampi village by the bazaar or in Kamalapura on the southern edge of the monument zone. For quiet, cross the river to Anegundi. For trains, chain hotels and the widest choice, stay in Hosapete, 13 km away. The resorts are scattered outside all of them and depend on transfers.

The areas, compared
Which part of Hampi to choose. The hotels themselves, with booking links, are listed below.
Hampi village, by the bazaar
Simple guesthouses a few minutes' walk from the Virupaksha Temple, so the Sacred Centre is on your doorstep and every ruin road starts here. Expect it to be loud by the morning puja. Gopi Guest House, with a rooftop looking over the temple, is the classic of this kind. Rooms are basic.
Kamalapura
The southern edge of the monument zone, next to the Royal Centre, the Archaeological Museum and the Pattabhirama Temple. This is where the proper hotels inside the heritage zone are: the state-run KSTDC Mayura Vijayanagara (21 rooms, about 4.5 km from Vittala; book ahead, it stays busy) and Clarks Inn opposite the museum. Evolve Back, the luxury palace-style resort, is in woodland nearby.
Anegundi, across the river
The older village on the north bank, quieter than anything on the temple side. The Kishkinda Trust has restored village houses into guesthouses (Uramma Heritage Homes among them, and six houses in total, so book early); staff are local and the income goes into village crafts. Reached by motorboat until before sunset, or by road over the Anegundi bridge.
The north bank beyond Anegundi
The paddy-and-boulder country of cushion cafes and long stays. In 2020 the authorities demolished illegal restaurants, hotels and guesthouses on the Virupapur Gaddi islet, after the Supreme Court ordered their removal from the heritage core zone and declined to halt the demolition. Before booking anything advertised on the islet, check what is actually there. The north-bank stay in our list is further out: Zostel in Rajapur near Gangavathi (adults only, hut-style dorms, a restaurant over the paddies). When the river rises in the monsoon the boats stop, and the far bank becomes a 25 km detour by road.
Hosapete (Hospet)
The town with the railhead and most of the hotel stock, 13 km from the ruins; buses run to Hampi Bazaar all day (about 30 minutes, ~₹25). The Royal Orchid Central Kireeti is a five-minute walk from the station, with a pool and a kids' section. Sensible for families, late arrivals and festival dates, at the cost of a daily commute.
Resorts further out
Heritage Resort Hampi, villas on an organic estate about 6 km from the ruins; Vijayshree Resort near Malapanagudi on the Hosapete road; Hampi's Boulders Resort, stone cottages in the Yamini Hills on the Tungabhadra, remote and reliant on the resort's transfers; WelcomHeritage Shivavilas Palace near Sandur; Hyatt Place in the JSW Vidyanagar township, about 35 km away.
Which to choose
Backpackers and first-timers on a budget: Hampi village, or the north bank if you plan to stay a while. Families: Kamalapura or Hosapete, where there are pools and rooms with private bathrooms, and a rickshaw for the day (about ₹1,000–1,500) saves walking in the heat. Quiet and atmosphere over amenities: Anegundi. Arriving by night train: Hosapete, a short walk from the station. Comfort and a pool, with transfers: the resorts. Lists by price level: budget hotels, boutique stays and luxury hotels.
Hampi Utsav
During Hampi Utsav rooms and cabs price up sharply. Karnataka Tourism's own advice is that hotels in Hosapete and Hampi fill up months ahead. The dates are announced late and have moved between November, January and February, so watch karnatakatourism.org and vijayanagara.nic.in and book within days of the announcement. Anegundi across the river is the quieter option.
