Boat rides in Hampi
Boating in Hampi means the coracle: a round bamboo boat that a single boatman turns with one paddle, drifting past granite boulders, bathing steps and half-submerged carvings. Rides start at the ghats near the Virupaksha and Kodandarama temples and at Sanapur Lake, last about 20–40 minutes and cost about ₹500–1,500 per boat, hired on the spot.

The coracle
The teppa, or coracle, is the working boat of the Tungabhadra: a woven bamboo frame covered with hide or tar, used for crossing and fishing long before it carried visitors, and the boatmen come from river families who still cross this way. The ride is calm and slow; most boatmen add a few seconds of spinning on the water. You see the riverside ruins from below, at water level, which no road gives you. The river itself is protected: India's first otter conservation reserve was declared on the Tungabhadra, and it takes in the Hampi stretch.
Where to take a coracle
Karnataka Tourism names three boarding points.
Near the Virupaksha Temple
The ghats at the head of the bazaar, the easiest to reach on foot from the Virupaksha Temple.
Near the Kodandarama Temple
On the river near the Kodandarama Temple; Karnataka Tourism notes it as a popular sunset spot and a place to walk up and hire a boat.
Sanapur Lake
On the north bank, a reservoir among boulders where villagers take visitors out; by late afternoon the shores fill for the sunset. More on the Sanapur Lake page.
To Nava Brindavana
A short coracle hop from the Anegundi bank takes pilgrims to the island of nine Madhva saints' shrines. The rituals finish by noon, so go in the morning.

Safety
Life jackets are standard issue and must be worn for the whole ride, whatever your swimming ability. Getting in and out means stepping down onto a low, unsteady floor and do not lean over the edge. Keep phones and cameras in a dry bag, since splashes happen. Toddlers should be held. Rides are restricted or paused in heavy monsoon rains or strong currents, and the riverside monuments have flooded before when a dam gate failed: check on the day. At Sanapur, depths and undercurrents are deceptive and crocodiles have been sighted, so do not swim or cliff-jump.
The motorboat crossing
The coracle is a ride; the way across the river is the motorboat. It runs roughly 07:00–17:30 from Hampi to Virupapur Gaddi and Anegundi, about ₹50–100 per person, and the last boat leaves before sunset. When the river rises the boats stop, and the far bank becomes a 25 km detour over the Anegundi bridge, about ₹500–800 by tuk-tuk. Other ways to move between the sites: getting around Hampi.
