Maha Shivaratri in Haridwar: the Ganga dip and Kankhal's Shiva

The night the world stays awake for Shiva

Haridwar keeps Maha Shivaratri by the river: 6 March 2027. The day starts at first light with a dip at Har Ki Pauri, and many bathers then carry Ganga water to a Shiva temple to pour on the linga. The busiest is Daksheshwar Mahadev in Kankhal, where by tradition Daksha held the sacrifice at which Sati gave up her life. In a Kumbh or Ardh Kumbh year at Haridwar the date is also a bathing day of the mela, and the town runs on mela rules.

Where to watch

Har Ki Pauri (Brahma Kund): the main bathing ghat; the dawn dip opens the day.

Daksheshwar Mahadev, Kankhal: the town's chief Shiva temple for the night, dressed in lights and flowers for a special aarti and puja, with separate queue routes on the day.

Ganga water for Shiva

Haridwar is not a jyotirlinga town, and its Shivaratri is less a single night in one shrine than a morning on the river. Bathers reach Har Ki Pauri from dawn, take the dip and fill a vessel to offer in a temple. At Daksheswara Mahadev the temple is dressed in lights and flowers for a special aarti and puja, and the linga receives turmeric, sandalwood, bel leaves and dhatura along with the water. The police barricade the approaches and set separate routes for darshan.

In the days before, the town also sees a smaller winter Kanwar: pilgrims in saffron collect Ganga water at the ghats and carry it home on decorated poles to offer at their own Shiva temples on the night. It is a fraction of July's Kanwar Yatra, but traffic police are still posted at the crossings and on the highways.

The night vigil itself, with its four watches of worship, is kept in the temples and ashrams; the parent page explains it: Maha Shivaratri.

The Kankhal circuit

Kankhal, the old quarter south of the centre, holds the Shiva and Sati places of the town, close enough to walk between.

Daksheswara Mahadev

By tradition the site of Daksha's sacrifice, to which Shiva was not invited. The Nagara-style temple was raised in 1810 by Rani Dhankaur and rebuilt in 1962; about 4 km from the station.

Sati Kund

A plain tank a few steps away, held to be the fire pit where Sati gave up her body. Visited together with the temple. Sati Kund.

Parad Shivling

In Harihar Ashram, about ten minutes from Daksheswara, a linga of roughly 150 kg of solidified mercury. Free, shoes off. Parad Shivling.

In a Kumbh year

When Haridwar hosts a Kumbh or Ardh Kumbh, Maha Shivaratri falls inside the mela and is one of its listed bathing days; the mela administration can also make it an Amrit Snan, the main royal bath of the akharas. Then treat it as a mela date: be in town by the previous afternoon, book rooms about four months ahead instead of one, and take trains the day sales open, 60 days out. See Kumbh Mela in Haridwar.

Practical notes

  • A cold dip — February averages about 24 °C by day and 9 °C at night, March about 30 and 14. For a dawn bath bring a towel and a full change of clothes, and something warm for after.
  • Crowds at the ghat — The UK Foreign Office notes that stampedes have occurred at large religious gatherings and advises following local authorities. Use the routes the police set and do not stop in the middle of the flow on the steps.
  • The evening aarti — The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri is held every evening, Shivaratri included, and is free. Times: Haridwar aarti.
  • Getting there — Haridwar Junction is about a twenty-minute walk from Har Ki Pauri, and direct trains from Delhi include Vande Bharat and Shatabdi services; check times on Indian Railways. From Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport it is about an hour to an hour and a half by road. More: how to get to Haridwar.
