Hampi Utsav (Vijaya Utsava): three nights of music and light in the ruins

Three nights when the ruined capital fills with music and light

Hampi Utsav, also called Vijaya Utsava, the Festival of Victory, is Karnataka's state festival in the ruins of Vijayanagara: three days of folk processions, concerts and light shows, with the monuments lit at night. Entry and public seating at the stages are free. Nearest announced dates: 3–5 November 2026 (expected); check them with Karnataka Tourism before you travel. Over the years the festival has been held in November and between January and March, and each edition is confirmed through the Vijayanagara district administration, often only a few weeks ahead.

The legend

From 1336 to 1565 Hampi was the Vijayanagara capital. In 1442 the Persian envoy Abdur Razzaq saw a city in seven rings of walls, crowded with shops and bazaars.

👑

The royal centre held the Great Platform, the Mahanavami Dibba, also called Dasara; visitors named it the House of Victory. Mahanavami was Vijayanagara's Dasara.

🏚️

In 1565, after the Battle of Talikota, the capital was sacked, and Hampi stayed a field of ruins for centuries.

🎆

Today Karnataka celebrates Vijaya Utsava, the Festival of Victory, here again, tracing the name to Krishnadevaraya's era: the ruins are lit and filled with music.

Customs

Janapada Kalavahini

The festival opens with a great procession of folk dancers and musicians.

Rural sports: traditional kusti wrestling and stone-lifting contests.

True or myth

Where to celebrate

Hampi

Hampi Utsav, also called Vijaya Utsava, fills the ruins with three nights of free concerts and lights; its dates move every year (13–15 February in 2026).

What the festival is

Karnataka Tourism traces the festival to the era of Krishnadevaraya, when Vijayanagara's kings held great public festivals in their capital; the reliefs on the Mahanavami Dibba and the Hazara Rama temple show processions, musicians and dancers of that time. Today's Utsav is a festival run by the state, built around that memory: for three nights the ruins become stages.

It is not held on fixed dates. Recent editions were held between January and March, the festival has been called off in some years (in 2018 because of drought), and the state government has since announced a move to early November. The date above is the nearest announced one: check it with Karnataka Tourism and the district administration before booking.

Stages and places to be

The programme is spread over several stages across the site. Specific artists and timings are published close to the date.

Main stage, M. P. Prakash Vedike (Gayatri Peetha ground)

The inauguration and the big evening concerts, from classical music to film songs. The largest crowd of the festival sits here.

Mahanavami Dibba (Vidyaranya stage)

The royal platform of the Mahanavami Dibba in the Royal Centre has been used as a festival stage.

Vittala temple and the stone chariot

A named Utsav venue and the most photographed lit monument; see the stone chariot. By day it is on the ASI ticket: about ₹40 for citizens of India, SAARC and BIMSTEC countries, about ₹600 for other foreigners, under-15s free.

Virupaksha temple

The living temple at the head of Hampi Bazaar, lit during the festival and outside the ASI ticketed circuit. See Virupaksha temple.

Anegundi (Hakka Bukka stage)

The older settlement across the Tungabhadra has its own stage. Reach it by coracle from near Vittala or by road via Hosapete.

Free viewpoints

Hemakuta Hill above Virupaksha for the lit temple, Matanga Hill for the widest view, and the Tungabhadra bank near the Vittala approach for the river aarti.

Where to stay and how to get there

The difficulty is timing: dates come late, and rooms go fast once they do. Karnataka Tourism itself says hotels in Hosapete and Hampi fill up months in advance.

  1. Watch the official announcement

Follow karnatakatourism.org and the Vijayanagara district site (vijayanagara.nic.in), and book within days of the announcement.

  2. Choose Hosapete or Anegundi

Hosapete (Hospet), the town 13 km away, has most of the hotels and the railhead; Anegundi across the river is quieter. Rooms and cabs cost noticeably more during the festival. See where to stay in Hampi.

  3. Arrive the day before

The opening evening has the inauguration, the main stage programme and the lighting. A day in hand lets you see the monuments in daylight before the crowds.

  4. Getting there

Karnataka Tourism: Hosapete Junction (HPT) is about 13 km away, Jindal Vijayanagar Airport about 40 minutes, Bengaluru about 6 hours by road via NH48 and NH50. Details: how to get to Hampi.

  5. Pack for the ruins

Hampi is a plastic-free zone: carry a reusable bottle. Wear comfortable shoes for walking, and a hat and sunscreen for the day.

Etiquette and safety

The festival is free and open, and very busy: one recent edition was planned for 5 to 6 lakh (500,000 to 600,000) visitors over three days.

  • Temples stay temples — Virupaksha is a working temple: shoes off, shoulders and knees covered. See temple dress code in Hampi.
  • Look after the stones — The monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage site protected by the ASI: do not climb on the carvings for a better view of the stage.
  • Crowd basics — FCDO notes that stampedes have occurred at some events with large crowds, including religious gatherings, and advises following the advice of the local authorities. Agree a meeting point, and keep to lit roads at night. Emergency number: 112. More: Hampi safety.
