Animals in Delhi

← Delhi

🐒 Nilgai (blue bull)

The state animal of Delhi, and the largest wild animal most people in the city will ever see. Its name means «blue cow», and the link with cattle has kept it from being hunted across the Hindi belt.

Boselaphus tragocamelus

🐒 Golden jackal

Camera traps set across Asola Bhatti in 2021–2022 by the BNHS and the Delhi forest department caught jackals scavenging nilgai carcasses, and never more than two of them in one frame.

Canis aureus

🐒 Northern plains grey langur

Named for Hanuman and rarely harmed anywhere in north India, which is the main reason it survives inside towns at all.

Semnopithecus entellus

🐒 Bengal monitor lizard

The goh appears in Maratha fort legend as the animal whose grip on a wall let climbers scale it; the story is folklore, but the lizard's claws really do hold rock.

Varanus bengalensis
