Agra

Agra itinerary: one, two or three days

← Agra

One full day covers the essentials: the Taj Mahal at opening, Agra Fort and the old city, then the tombs across the Yamuna and a sunset view of the Taj. A second day adds Akbar, either his abandoned capital at Fatehpur Sikri or his tomb at Sikandra. A third goes beyond the monuments. Every plan bends around one fact: the Taj is closed on Fridays.

Three rules that shape every plan

  • The Taj keeps its own hours. It opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and it is closed on Fridays. Other monuments are open daily, sunrise to sunset.
  • The first hour matters most. The crowds arrive by nine. Ticket windows at the East and West gates open an hour before sunrise, or buy online through the ASI; the official site suggests the East Gate to avoid crowds.
  • Sunsets need a plan. The Mehtab Bagh garden across the river shuts at sundown, so arrive an hour or more before it.

One day in Agra

The classic loop, with the river crossing kept for the afternoon.

  1. Dawn: the Taj Mahal

Be at the East Gate for opening. Food, tripods, drones, chargers and big bags are not allowed in, so travel light. The main mausoleum is an optional extra ticket. Taj Mahal.

  2. Late morning: Agra Fort

About 2.5 km north-west of the Taj, one metro ride or a short tuk-tuk hop. Shah Jahan spent his last eight years here as his son's prisoner. Agra Fort.

  3. Midday: the old city

Jama Masjid stands opposite the Fort (dress modestly, avoid prayer times), with Kinari Bazaar behind it and Mankameshwar Mandir, the city's most revered Shiva temple, in the lanes between the two. Darshan there runs roughly 5:00–12:00 and 16:00–21:00.

  4. Afternoon: the east bank

Cross the Yamuna to Itimad-ud-Daulah, the 'Baby Taj' where the inlay later used on the Taj first appeared on this scale, then Chini ka Rauza, a kilometre north: a tomb faced in glazed Persian tile, free to enter.

  5. Sunset: the Taj from across the river

Mehtab Bagh faces the Taj from the north bank and closes at sunset. Next to it, the Agra Development Authority's Taj View Point stays open after dark.

  6. Evening: Sadar Bazaar

The evening bazaar near Agra Cantt: petha, chaat, leather, liveliest between 18:00 and 21:00. Sadar Bazaar.

Two days: add Akbar

Day one as above; day two goes to Akbar.

  1. Option A: Fatehpur Sikri

Akbar's red-sandstone capital and a UNESCO site, 37 km west of Agra, built between 1571 and 1585 and left when the court moved to Lahore. Inside: palaces, the Buland Darwaza and the marble tomb of the Sufi saint Salim Chishti. From October to March birders add Keoladeo bird park at Bharatpur, 57 km from Agra by road. Fatehpur Sikri.

  2. Option B: Sikandra

Akbar's tomb, built in 1604–1613 in grounds of 119 acres where blackbuck and langurs roam. The domeless tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani, Akbar's empress, is a kilometre away, and Gurudwara Guru ka Tal minutes from Akbar's tomb. Sikandra.

  3. If the moon is right

Night viewing of the Taj runs on five nights a month around the full moon, never on Fridays or in Ramzan, in half-hour batches of up to 50 people, 400 a night. Tickets are separate.

Three days: the Agra behind the monuments

Pick one or two; each fills a morning or a day.

  1. Sunrise at Dussehra Ghat

A small working ghat against the Taj's eastern wall, nearly empty at dawn and free. It is the Taj perimeter, so carry ID. Dussehra Ghat.

  2. The Mughal Heritage Walk at Kachhpura

A one-kilometre village walk opposite the Taj with local guides, ending at Mehtab Bagh; the fee stays in the village. Book a day or two ahead.

  3. The four corners of Agra

Four Shiva temples said to guard the city: Mankameshwar, Balkeshwar, Rajeshwar and Prithvinath. Local people visit all four in a day, especially on Mondays of Shravan and on Shivaratri.

  4. Birds and bears

Sur Sarovar, a Ramsar wetland about 20 km out, on a winter morning, with the Wildlife SOS bear rescue centre inside it (advance booking only).

  5. A day out

Mathura and Vrindavan for Krishna's Braj, or the Chambal river and the Bateshwar temples to the south-east. See day trips from Agra.

If one of your days is a Friday

The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, and the Gatimaan Express from Delhi does not run that day. Everything else is open: give Friday to the Fort, the east-bank tombs, Sikandra or Fatehpur Sikri. To see the Taj anyway, the official Taj site points to the Taj View Point by Mehtab Bagh, which is open on Fridays too.

When the season changes the plan

October to March is the comfortable window. In December and January dawn fog can hide the Taj, so keep a second morning in reserve if you can. May and June, with average highs of 41–42 °C, are best avoided. More on the months: best time to visit Agra.
