Temples in Ujjain

← Ujjain

Every temple visit in Ujjain starts at Mahakaleshwar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, where Shiva is worshipped as Mahakal, the Lord of Time. Around it lies a ring of shrines that pilgrims cover in one round: Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath, Chintaman Ganesh and others.

The main temples and what each is known for

Shoes come off at the door and modest dress is expected. Legends are given as the temples and the Puranas tell them.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

The temple committee describes it as the only Jyotirlinga where Shiva is worshipped as Mahakal, ruler of time, life and death. As the Shiva Purana tells it, when the demon Dushan tormented Ujjain, Shiva appeared as a radiant jyoti, destroyed him and stayed here as the Jyotirlinga. Mahakaleshwar: visit details.

Harsiddhi Mata

Close to Ram Ghat, revered as one of the 51 Shaktipeeths, where by tradition the elbow of the goddess Sati fell. Two tall lamp pillars with hundreds of niches stand at the entrance and are lit in full on festival days. Harsiddhi Temple.

Kal Bhairav

Shiva in his fierce form and, in myth, the guardian of Ujjain. The temple is known for offering liquor to the deity, which the temple committee and MP Tourism describe as a ritual. Kal Bhairav Temple.

Mangalnath

A Shiva temple above the Shipra, named in the Matsya and Skanda Puranas as the birthplace of Mangal, the planet Mars. Pilgrims come for Bhaat Puja and other rites for Mangal dosha; Tuesday is the busy day. Mangalnath Temple.

Chintaman Ganesh

About 7 km from the centre across the Shipra, with three forms of Ganesha in one sanctum, led by Chintaman, who removes worries. Wednesday is the busiest day; on every Wednesday of the month of Chaitra the temple holds a jatra, a fair.

Gopal Mandir

A 19th-century Maratha temple to Krishna as Dwarkadhish in the main bazaar, built by Baijabai Shinde. Its silver-plated doors are held to be the ones taken from Somnath by Mahmud of Ghazni. Busiest on Janmashtami (25–26 August 2027). Gopal Mandir.

Gadkalika, Sandipani Ashram and Siddhavat

Gadkalika is the Kali temple held to be the goddess of the poet Kalidasa. Sandipani Ashram is where, by tradition, Krishna, Balarama and Sudama studied under the sage Sandipani. At Siddhavat, an old banyan on the Shipra, families perform rites for their ancestors.

Darshan and aarti at Mahakaleshwar

General darshan is in the common queue. For a faster line the temple committee sells a Sheeghra Darshan ticket on its official website.

The temple holds five aartis a day: the Bhasma Aarti at 4:00–6:00 and the Shayan Aarti, the last, at 22:30–23:00. The Dadyodak, Bhog and Sandhya aartis shift by half an hour between the summer schedule (Chaitra to Ashwin) and the winter one (Kartik to Phalgun). Full times are on the Ujjain aarti page.

The Bhasma Aarti needs advance booking on the temple's website, shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in: regular booking opens on the 1st of the previous month at 8:00, and a tatkal quota the day before at 8:00. Sandhya and Shayan Aarti places are booked there on the day, from 12:00 and 16:00, first come, first served. The temple states that these bookings are available only through its official website.

For what to wear, see temple dress code in Ujjain.

Inside the Mahakal complex and Mahakal Lok

The temple committee counts 53 temples within the premises. Tradition says darshan of Mahakal should be followed by darshan of Sakshi Gopal, who stands witness to the devotee's visit. On the upper floor is Nagchandreshwar, opened to the public only once a year, on Nag Panchami (6 August 2027, expected).

The approach is through Shri Mahakal Lok, which the temple calls Mahakal Mahalok: a corridor of up to 910 metres with 108 pillars, 76 sculptures and 52 murals based on the Shiva Purana, around Rudra Sagar lake. The water screen and fountain show at Rudra Sagar runs daily at 20:00.

How to plan the temple round

Mahakaleshwar on foot, the outer temples by auto-rickshaw.

  1. Mahakaleshwar and Harsiddhi on foot

The corridor is pedestrian. Harsiddhi and Bada Ganesh are close to the temple, and Ram Ghat is a short walk further.

  2. One auto for the outer temples

One driver for Kal Bhairav, Sandipani Ashram, Mangalnath and back to Ram Ghat is the usual arrangement, at approximately ₹800–1,000 for the day. Autos have no meters: agree the price first.

  3. Gadkalika loop and Chintaman Ganesh

Gadkalika shares a short loop with the Bhartrihari Caves and Pir Matsyendranath. Chintaman Ganesh, across the river, fits at the start or end of the auto day.

  4. Check the day of the week

Monday is Shiva's day at Mahakaleshwar, Tuesday fills Mangalnath and Wednesday fills Chintaman Ganesh. On the Mondays from Shravan to Bhadrapada the Mahakal Sawari procession (19 July – 30 August 2027, expected) leaves the temple at 16:00, and the centre is closed to traffic from late morning.

A short history of Mahakaleshwar

According to the temple committee, by the 10th century, under the Paramara kings of Malwa, the temple had reached a peak of architectural beauty. In 1235 Sultan Iltutmish demolished it, but the site remained a place of pilgrimage. The present structure dates from the Maratha revival: in the 1730s Ramchandra Baba Shenvi, Diwan to Ranoji Rao Shinde, rebuilt it.

The biggest days of the temple year are Maha Shivaratri (6 March 2027), with worship through the day and the Mahapuja at night, and, once every twelve years, the Simhastha Kumbh on the Shipra (27 March – 27 May 2028, expected).
