Karnataka for travellers: Bengaluru, Mysore, Hampi and the coast

Karnataka holds three very different trips in one state: the plateau cities of Bengaluru and Mysore, the boulder-strewn ruins of Hampi in the dry north, and the temple coast of Udupi, Gokarna and Murudeshwar on the Arabian Sea. The capital is Bengaluru, the language is Kannada, and the state, formed on 1 November 1956 as Mysore State, took the name Karnataka in 1973.

Cities

Hampi

The ghost capital of the Vijayanagara empire, strewn across a boulder moonscape on the Tungabhadra: temples, bazaars and a famous stone chariot left mid-sentence five centuries ago. One of India's most spectacular ruins, with boulder-top sunsets over the whole vanished city.

📅 Nov–Feb

Bengaluru

India's tech capital keeps its older selves in plain sight: a rock-cut cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, and the market lanes of Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Filter coffee and dosa at dawn, craft beer and bookshops after dark, and a plateau climate that stays mild all year.

📅 Nov–Feb

Mysore

Genteel Mysore runs on sandalwood, silk and royal pageantry: a palace that lights up with 100,000 bulbs, the hilltop Chamundi temple, and a Dasara festival that still parades elephants. The grandest palace in the south, and the home of Ashtanga yoga.

📅 Oct–Feb

Udupi

A small coastal town with an outsized culinary shadow: the Udupi restaurants found all over India take their name and their vegetarian repertoire from here. At its centre is the 13th-century Krishna Matha, where the deity is seen through a silver-plated window and eight monasteries take turns running the temple.

📅 Nov–Feb

Gokarna

A Karnataka temple town that doubles as a quieter Goa: pilgrims fill the ancient Mahabaleshwar shrine while a cliff path links half-moon beaches named Om and Paradise. Empty sands, sunset walks and a slower coast: Goa without the crowds.

📅 Nov–Feb

Murudeshwar

On a spit of the Karnataka coast stands one of the world's tallest Shiva statues, gazing out to sea from Kanduka hill. The draw is the jaw-dropping view, and a selfie beside the giant Shiva.

Three trips in one state

The plateau: Bengaluru and Mysore

Bengaluru sits at about 900 m and stays mild all year; it is the gateway for almost everything else in the state. Mysore is the royal city: the palace, Chamundi Hill and Dasara. The two are close enough to pair: trains take from about 1 h 40 min on the Vande Bharat, and KSRTC buses leave Bengaluru every 15–30 minutes for a 2–2.5 hour run.

The ruins: Hampi

The capital of the Vijayanagara empire, spread over a landscape of boulders on the Tungabhadra. Hampi has no station of its own: the night Hampi Express from Bengaluru leaves around 22:00 and reaches Hosapete, 13 km away, at about 07:30, and some forty overnight sleeper buses cover the 289 km.

The coast: Udupi, Gokarna, Murudeshwar

Udupi for its Krishna Matha and the vegetarian cooking that gave its name to restaurants across India; Gokarna for the Mahabaleshwar temple and its beaches; Murudeshwar for its giant Shiva above the sea. From Bengaluru the overnight Panchaganga Express reaches Udupi in about 9.5 hours and Gokarna Road in about 12. From Goa, Konkan Railway trains take about 1.5–2 hours to Gokarna Road and 2–3 hours to Murudeshwar.

When to go

November to February is the best window almost everywhere in the state. The details differ by region:

  • Bengaluru is comfortable all year; September and October bring heavy showers and local flooding.
  • Mysore is good from October to February, and Dasara in October brings crowds and higher prices.
  • Hampi is open sun on rock: comfortable October to February, around 42°C from March to June, so those months are best avoided.
  • The coast loses its sea in the monsoon. From June to September swimming is unsafe and has been banned after drownings, beach shacks close, and diving at Netrani off Murudeshwar runs only October–May.

Festivals

Mysuru Dasara runs from 11 to 21 October 2026 and is expected from 30 September to 9 October 2027, ending with the elephant procession. The Bengaluru Karaga, a night procession of the old city, is expected on 12–20 April 2027. At Melukote near Mysore, the Vairamudi festival is expected on 13–25 March 2027, with the main day on 18 March. The 2027 dates are provisional. For temples by deity, see Bengaluru and Mysore.

The state symbols

Karnataka's symbols are the Asian elephant, the Indian roller, the lotus, Indian sandalwood and, since 2017, the southern birdwing, India's largest butterfly. Sandalwood is closely tied to Mysore, and its harvest and transport are regulated by Karnataka forest law, so felling a tree without permission is an offence. The roller is easy to miss until it flies: a dull bird on a wire that turns two shades of brilliant blue the moment it opens its wings.
