The whole town on foot
The main bazaar is about a kilometre long and the lake sits inside a ring of 52 ghats; there is nothing here that wheels reach faster. Shoes come off at the ghats.

Scooter for what lies around
Makes sense for the Savitri ropeway and the dunes outside town, not for the centre. A licence is required and the deposit is normal practice.

Auto-rickshaws at the bus stand
They wait at the bus stand and by the hotels, and they will not go into the narrow lanes by the lake; you are dropped at the edge. The apps do not work here at all.
~₹50–100 for a ride around town
At the ghats flowers are pressed into your hands, then a "donation" of a thousand rupees is demanded. Do not take them.
