Pune airport (PNQ) to the city

← Pune

Pune Airport (PNQ) is at Lohegaon, north-east of the city, about 10 km from the centre and from Koregaon Park. It is a civilian terminal on an Indian Air Force base and handles mostly domestic flights. Into town, the usual choice is an app cab or a prepaid taxi; the cheaper route is a city bus, or a short ride to Ramwadi metro station and the Aqua Line.

Pune Airport (PNQ), Lohegaon

A small airport with a new terminal, ten kilometres from the centre. Mostly domestic flights; from abroad people usually land in Mumbai and take the train.

From the airport to the city

Prices are approximate and change with the time of day.

  1. App cab or prepaid taxi (~30–45 min)

Uber, Ola and Rapido pick up at the terminal; to Koregaon Park or the centre the fare is approximately ₹200–500. The airport also has a prepaid taxi service and ordinary taxis. In rush hour the ride can take twice as long.

  2. Feeder bus to Ramwadi, then the metro

There is no metro station at the terminal. The nearest is Ramwadi, about 3 km away, at the end of the Aqua Line, which runs west across the city to Vanaz. PMPML, the city bus company, runs feeder buses between the terminal and Ramwadi. A metro ride costs approximately ₹10–35.

  3. City bus

PMPML buses also stop at the airport. They are the cheapest way into town but slow, and worth it mainly if your hotel is on a route you can follow on a map.

Which way to go

For Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar and Camp a cab is the simplest: they are on the airport side of the river. For the old city around Shaniwar Wada, Deccan or FC Road, the metro route makes more sense, because the Aqua Line crosses to the west bank and meets the Purple Line, which runs from PCMC to Swargate through the old city. For Hinjewadi and the western IT districts, plan on a cab: the ride across the whole city can take an hour or more. More on the metro and on getting around Pune.

The airport itself

PNQ is a civil enclave run by the Airports Authority of India on the western side of Lohegaon Air Force Station; the airfield opened in 1939 as RAF Poona. The new terminal building, about 52,000 m² and twice the size of the old one, is decorated with Maharashtrian folk art, including Warli painting, with a bronze statue of Shivaji in front. It is one of the ten busiest airports in India, at around 11 million passengers a year, with one runway. Flights are mostly domestic, to Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Goa and dozens of other cities; international routes are few, mainly to the Gulf (Dubai, Abu Dhabi) and to Bangkok. The state government has approved renaming it Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Airport.

Flying from abroad: Mumbai and the train

With few international flights, most visitors from abroad land at Mumbai. From Mumbai airport a car takes three to five hours in traffic; the train from Mumbai CSMT is usually calmer: Vande Bharat (approximately ₹580–900) or the Deccan Queen and other day expresses (approximately ₹90–290); check current times on NTES or the Indian Railways site. Trains arrive at Pune Junction, in the city. See how to get to Pune and the railway station page.
