Pune railway station: Pune Junction
Pune railway station and Pune Junction are the same place: the city's main station, code PUNE, on Central Railway's Pune division, with 6 platforms. Most visitors arrive here from Mumbai, since trains leave CSMT all day and the station is right in the city. The Pune Railway Station metro stop on the Aqua Line and the MSRTC Pune Station bus stand are both next to it.
By train from Mumbai
The Mumbai line is the reason most people never think about flying here: trains leave CSMT all day and climb the Western Ghats on the way. Pune Junction is right in the city.
Best option
Shivneri coaches and night sleepers
MSRTC Shivneri leaves Mumbai every 30–60 minutes: Volvo air-conditioned, and an electric e-Shivneri on some runs. Long-distance sleepers arrive from Goa, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
Trains from Mumbai
The Mumbai line climbs the Western Ghats on the way. Approximate fares and journey times:
- Vande Bharat, chair car: roughly ₹580–900.
- Deccan Queen, Pragati and other day expresses: about 3–3.5 h, roughly ₹90–290. The Deccan Queen has kept its dining car and crosses the Ghats in daylight: slower than Vande Bharat, and the more interesting ride.
Flying into Mumbai is a workable way to reach Pune: from Mumbai airport a car takes three to five hours, and the train from CSMT is usually the calmer option. Check current timings on NTES (enquiry.indianrail.gov.in) and book long-distance tickets on IRCTC (irctc.co.in). More in how to get to Pune.
Onward from the station
Metro, buses and local trains that start at or next to Pune Junction.
Metro: Pune Railway Station
An elevated stop on the Aqua Line (Vanaz to Ramwadi), which crosses the Purple Line (PCMC to Swargate). Fares are roughly ₹10–35. See Pune metro.
MSRTC buses
Maharashtra state buses use three stands in the city: Pune Station next to the railway station (it also has a Shivneri stand), Shivajinagar and Swargate. Shivneri air-conditioned coaches to and from Mumbai run every 30–60 minutes, about 3–4 h, roughly ₹550–650.
Lonavala local
The Pune Suburban Railway runs one route, Pune Junction to Lonavala, via Shivaji Nagar, Kamshet and Malavli; some trains run only between Shivaji Nagar and Talegaon. It is the cheap way out to the Lonavala side for day trips.
Cabs and autos
App cabs start from about ₹150 across the centre; autos from about ₹25 plus ₹17 a km. Drivers here prefer to name a price, so booking through an app settles the fare first. Pune Airport (PNQ) is about 10 km from the centre.
The station itself
The station opened in 1858, when the line from Khandala reached Pune, and the present building dates from 1925. It has two entrances: HH Aga Khan Road on the south side and Raja Bahadur Mills Road on the north. Inside are waiting halls, retiring rooms, cloak rooms, food stalls, ATMs and three footbridges with a skywalk. Long-distance trains starting here include the Deccan Queen, Pragati, Indrayani and Sinhagad expresses to Mumbai and the Shatabdi to Secunderabad.
For a first breakfast, Vohuman Cafe, an Irani cafe running since 1978, is about five minutes away; see street food in Pune.
