Food, shopping and where to stay
Food is inexpensive at the bakeries, tiffin rooms and snack stalls (₹): a plate of ten steamed momos is about ₹100, and filter coffee at a South Indian restaurant costs a few rupees. Mid-range restaurants and town cafés are ₹₹, and the garden cafés of Coonoor and the heritage-hotel dining rooms ₹₹₹. More in what to eat and restaurants.
Souvenirs: homemade chocolate and Nilgiri tea are the classic buys. Genuine Toda embroidery, which has a Geographical Indication and is made only by hand by Toda women, starts from a few hundred rupees for small pieces; a dupatta is about ₹3,950 and a sari about ₹7,000. Prices are marked, and haggling is not how this work is sold. The Nilgiri Library gives visitors a reading-room membership for about ₹500 a month.
Accommodation ranges from hostels to heritage hotels; see where to stay, budget hotels and luxury hotels. The season moves prices more than anything else: in May, the month of the flower show, rooms double or triple and beds sell out weeks ahead around the flower show, while Coonoor is quieter.
How many days to budget for
Plan by direction, because the sights lie in different directions with little in between. Central Ooty (Botanical Garden, Rose Garden, lake, market) is compact, with Doddabetta a short ride up. Coonoor and its viewpoints are a separate outing, the Pykara road is a half day to the west, and Avalanche, Kotagiri or Mudumalai are trips of their own. The day you arrive on the toy train, which takes most of the morning, is best kept light. Count the car days: those are what make a budget grow.
