Hostels and budget stays in Ooty
Budget travellers in Ooty have three hostels to choose from: Zostel, a short walk from the bus and railway stations; goSTOPS, in a vintage bungalow on Gymkhana Club Road; and The Hosteller, in a restored colonial house about 1.7 km from the centre. All three have dorms and private rooms. For a quieter, old-fashioned stay, the YWCA Anandagiri Holiday Home rents simple rooms and cottages in a central garden. In May, the peak month, book early.

Four budget stays and who they suit
Booking links for the hostels are in the list above.
Zostel Ooty: for solo travellers who want company
Five minutes' walk from the bus and railway stations, on a slope with views towards Doddabetta. Mixed and female dorms with a locker per bed, a few private rooms, and staff who organise bonfires and group hikes. The crowd is young and lively, so it is not the place for quiet.
goSTOPS Ooty: a hostel with character
A restored vintage bungalow on leafy Gymkhana Club Road, with high ceilings, wooden floors and four-poster beds in the private rooms. Dorms and common areas are built for socialising, with a games room, a projector lounge and bonfire evenings. It is a short ride from Ooty Lake and the station.
The Hosteller Ooty: chain reliability
A branch of The Hosteller in a restored century-old colonial house, about 1.7 km from the centre. Dorm beds and private doubles each have their own bathroom, with wi-fi, housekeeping and round-the-clock security.
YWCA Anandagiri Holiday Home: quiet and central
A sprawling, flower-filled campus of cottages on the site of a 1920s brewery, run by the YWCA. Rooms range from simple standards to gate and garden cottages, kept clean and quiet, and the front desk helps with day trips and onward travel. Plain and old-fashioned rather than stylish, and good value for the area.
Ooty or Coonoor, and when to book
All four budget stays above are in Ooty, close to the centre, the lake and the stations, which matters if you arrive by the toy train or an early bus. Coonoor, 18–19 km away, is quieter; the hotel list on this site has no hostel there, only mid-range heritage hotels and estate stays. TNSTC buses link the two towns every 10 to 20 minutes for about ₹15–30.
May is peak season in the Nilgiris: room prices double or triple and the ghat road to Ooty queues, so book early. More on districts and mid-range options: where to stay in Ooty, boutique hotels and luxury hotels.
Before you book
Ooty is a hill station at about 2,240 m, and a few things work differently from the plains.
- Cold nights — From December to February average lows are 6–7°C, with frost on clear nights. Ask whether the room has a heater or extra blankets, and bring a warm layer.
- Women travelling alone — Zostel Ooty has female dorms. For general advice see is Ooty safe and is India safe.
- Bring a refillable bottle — The Nilgiris district bans 19 kinds of single-use plastic, plus 1–4 litre water cans and soft-drink bottles, and vehicles are checked at the entry checkposts. Carry a steel or copper bottle and refill it at the district's water ATMs.
