Places to visit near Ooty
The best trips from Ooty stay in the Nilgiris: Coonoor, 18 km away, with its tea estates and valley viewpoints; the Pykara road to the west; the forest lakes at Avalanche; Kotagiri and Catherine Falls to the east; and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, 68 km down towards Mysore. Mysore, Coimbatore and the Isha Yoga Center are farther by road and usually make a stop on the way in or out rather than a return day trip.
Isha Yoga Center
At the foot of the Velliangiri hills near Coimbatore, a place engineered for stillness: the consecrated Dhyanalinga and the towering 112-foot Adiyogi, Sadhguru's steel face of yoga. Meditation, yoga programs, and one of the largest sculptures on earth.

Mysore
Genteel Mysore runs on sandalwood, silk and royal pageantry: a palace that lights up with 100,000 bulbs, the hilltop Chamundi temple, and a Dasara festival that still parades elephants. The grandest palace in the south, and the home of Ashtanga yoga.
~100 km as the crow flies
Munnar
High in the Western Ghats, endless corrugated tea gardens roll away into mist, waterfalls and the odd colonial bungalow. The coolest, greenest escape in the south: hill walks, tea estates, and slopes that turn blue with the once-in-twelve-years neelakurinji bloom.
~150 km as the crow flies
Kochi
Kerala's seafaring crossroads, where Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and Jewish traders met: old Fort Kochi with its Chinese fishing nets, the synagogue and Jew Town, spice markets, antiques and evening Kathakali performances. The gateway to Kerala's famous backwaters, too.

Bengaluru
India's tech capital keeps its older selves in plain sight: a rock-cut cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, and the market lanes of Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Filter coffee and dosa at dawn, craft beer and bookshops after dark, and a plateau climate that stays mild all year.

Day trips, direction by direction
Sights around Ooty lie in different directions with little in between, so pick one direction per day. A car with driver for the day costs about ₹1,850–2,500 and is the usual way to string stops together.
Coonoor and its viewpoints (18 km)
TNSTC buses run between Ooty and Coonoor every 10 to 20 minutes, and the toy train covers the same stretch. In Coonoor: Sim's Park, All Saints Church and the Highfield tea factory, about 2 km from upper Coonoor, one of the few that lets walk-in visitors see tea being made. Dolphin's Nose, 10–12 km beyond Coonoor, looks across the gorge to Catherine Falls; Lamb's Rock is on the same road. Mist often closes both views after late morning, so go early. For a walk, the Droog Fort trail starts in the Nonsuch estate about 13 km from Coonoor: an hour each way through tea to the ruins of a fort of Tipu Sultan.
The Pykara road, west (15–20 km)
Wenlock Downs, the open grassland at the 9th Mile where many Indian films shot their song sequences, is about 15 km out; the Pine Forest is next to it. Pykara, about 20 km out on the Gudalur road, has a boating lake run by TTDC and the Pykara Falls, two drops of about 55 and 61 metres, fullest from July to October. The river is sacred to the Toda. Together they make a natural half day. More in lakes and waterfalls.
Avalanche and Emerald, south-west (23–28 km)
Past Emerald village the tea gives way to reservoirs ringed by shola forest and grassland. Private vehicles stop at the Avalanche forest checkpoint; from there the Tamil Nadu Forest Department runs its own bus and jeep safari of about two hours to Avalanche Lake, roughly 9:00 to 15:00, last entry near 14:00. Carry ID, and expect suspensions in the fire season or heavy rain. See nature trips.
Kotagiri and the east (about 30 km)
Kotagiri, at about 1,950 m, is a hill town among tea estates and was once a summer resort of the Madras Presidency. Around it: Catherine Falls, a two-step fall of about 76 m in all, seen from a viewpoint above; Kodanad View Point; the John Sullivan Memorial in his restored bungalow 2 km from town, a small museum of Nilgiris history; and Longwood Shola, where a two-hour walk with a Forest Department guide must be booked in advance. Kotagiri hosts the vegetable show in May, in the same weeks as the Ooty flower show.
Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, north-west (68 km)
Down the hills where Tamil Nadu meets Karnataka and Kerala, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Only Forest Department vehicles enter the safari zone. The one-hour bus safari from the Theppakadu reception centre is sold at the counter only, first come first served, and leaves when enough seats are filled; foreign nationals pay about ₹2,500. The department advises against March and April. The direct road via Masinagudi climbs 36 hairpin bends and is for cars only.

Before you set out
- Mornings are clearer — Cloud and mist routinely close the Coonoor viewpoints after late morning; start early on viewpoint days.
- Forest trips need a booking or a counter — Avalanche is reached on the Forest Department's own safari from the checkpoint. Longwood Shola and Mukurthi National Park are entered only on guided walks and treks booked on the department's Trek Tamil Nadu portal, with permit and guide included.
- Plastic rules — The Nilgiris bans 19 kinds of use-and-throw items, mostly plastic, plus 1–4 litre water cans and soft-drink bottles, and checks vehicles at the district checkposts; carry a steel or copper bottle.
- Monsoon roads — Landslides can hit the ghat roads in July–August and October–November; check conditions before a trip down to the plains. Seasons: best time to visit.
