Best time to visit Ooty and Coonoor
March to May is the best time to visit Ooty and Coonoor: mostly dry, with daytime highs around 23°C. May is also the busiest and most expensive month, because of the flower show. The Nilgiris catch both monsoons, so July and August are the months to avoid, October is the wettest month of the year, and December to February is dry and clear with nights near freezing.

The seasons in the Nilgiris
Ooty sits at about 2,240 m, so the plains' heat never reaches it: daytime highs stay between 17 and 23°C all year.
March to May is the season. March is almost dry; April and May stay warm by hill standards, around 23°C by day and 10–12°C at night, though showers return in May, with about nine rainy days. Gardens peak and the summer events run: the flower show, the fruit show at Sim's Park and races at the Ooty Racecourse, whose summer season runs from April to June.
June to September belongs to the south-west monsoon. June and September still count as good months, with about 150 and 120 mm of rain; July and August are the months to avoid, with the coolest days of the year (17–18°C) and landslides on the ghat roads. The tea estates are greenest from July through October, and the waterfalls are fullest then.
October and November bring the north-east monsoon. October is the wettest month of the year, about 190 mm over eleven days, and landslides can hit the ghat roads again in October and November.
December to February is dry, sunny and cold. Average lows fall to about 6–7°C, and frost settles on clear nights in December and January. Fog and drizzle, though, can turn up in any month here.

May: the flower show and the crowds
May is when the Horticulture Department's flower show fills the Government Botanical Garden, with the vegetable show at Kotagiri and the fruit show at Sim's Park in the same weeks. Rooms double or triple in price, beds in Ooty and Coonoor are booked out weeks ahead, and the ghat road to Ooty backs up; the district runs traffic diversions and remote parking. Book early, arrive the day before, and consider staying in Coonoor, which is quieter and 18–19 km away (see where to stay).
The toy train sells out weeks ahead in season. Reservations open 60 days before travel on IRCTC, and extra summer services are sometimes added between Mettupalayam and Coonoor around April to June.

Gardens and roses
April to June for the Rose Garden; the district names April, May and September for the Botanical Garden. More: flowers of Ooty.
Waterfalls
Pykara Falls are loudest from July to October; Catherine Falls are fullest right after the monsoon and can be a thread by March. See waterfalls.
Birds
October to March at first light around Kotagiri, when the weather is settled and winter migrants join the resident birds. See birds.
Forest walks and treks
Dry, clear mornings in the shola are most likely from October to March; from June to September the forest is wet and full of leeches. For Mukurthi, Tamil Nadu Tourism gives September–November and February–May. See nature trips.
Mudumalai safari
The Forest Department advises against peak summer, March and April.
Monsoon roads and cold nights
In the monsoon months landslides can close the ghat roads, in July–August and again in October–November; plan the climb from Coimbatore or Mettupalayam in daylight (see how to get there). The Forest Department's Avalanche safari can be suspended in heavy rain and in the fire season. In winter, buses and the toy train are unheated and early departures leave before dawn, so a warm layer matters here more than anywhere else in the south. General advice: is Ooty safe.
