Bike and scooter rental in Munnar
A rented scooter in Munnar costs roughly ₹500–800 a day, and it buys real freedom between viewpoints that sit far apart on empty estate roads. The catch is the terrain: steep switchbacks, fog that rolls in by the afternoon and unlit roads after dark. It suits riders who already know hill roads; everyone else is better off with a car and driver or a rickshaw for the day.
Scooter
Freedom on paper, but these are steep switchbacks with fog rolling in by afternoon: for riders who already know hill roads.
~₹500–800 per day
Half the road up is viewpoints, and stopping at them is normal practice rather than an extra favour; say so at the start of the ride.
🌅 Departures from Ernakulam start around two in the morning and thin out after ten; an afternoon start means arriving in the dark.
The state bus and the taxi take the same route and roughly the same time; the difference is about twenty times in money and having a seat guaranteed.

Before you rent
Paperwork and a quick check of the bike save trouble at a police stop and on the first descent.
- Licence and permit — Foreign riders need an international driving permit (the 1949 convention version) together with their home licence, and the permit has to be obtained in your home country before the trip.
- Legal rental bikes have black plates — In Kerala two-wheelers may be hired out only under the transport department's rent-a-bike licence, on bikes registered as transport vehicles, and hire bikes carry black number plates with yellow letters. Renting out a private white-plate bike for money is an offence under the Motor Vehicles Act.
- Helmet, for both of you — Wear a helmet and proper shoes; ask for a second helmet if you ride with a passenger.
- Check the brakes and the tank — Test both brakes before the first downhill and fill up in town: the viewpoints along the estate roads are far apart.
Rides worth doing
Top Station road. The classic ride runs east through tea country to Mattupetty (about 13 km), Echo Point (about 15 km), Kundala and Top Station at about 32 km, where the hills drop to the Theni plains. Go early: Top Station is clearest before 7 AM. The same road leads on towards Vattavada, but the forest stretch through Pampadum Shola closes to traffic by 6 PM.
Lockhart Gap and Anayirankal. East past Chinnakanal, 22–28 km out, through the Lockhart estate and the rock cuttings at Gap, to a reservoir where elephants come to drink at dawn and dusk. Keep well back if a herd is on the road.
Attukad. A short ride of 8–9 km towards Pallivasal to the waterfall reached over a wooden footbridge.
Marayoor road. North past Lakkam Waterfalls to Marayoor, about 40 km away, for the dolmens and sandalwood country.
One ride is not for a scooter: the last 12 km to Kolukkumalai are a jeep-only track from Suryanelli.
When not to ride
From June to August landslides close stretches of the Gap Road, and night driving can be banned in heavy rain. In any season the hill roads are unlit, so be back in town before dark, and avoid riding in fog: low visibility is when accidents happen. Cows and other animals wander onto the road.
