Best time to visit Kochi
The best time to visit Kochi is December to February, when rain falls on zero to two days a month and the guide's sea calendar marks the sea open. Do not expect a cool season: the city sits almost at sea level, days stay at 33–35 °C all winter and the air is humid. The real choice in Kochi is between dry and wet. The south-west monsoon soaks June to August, a second, softer wet spell runs through October and November, and the festive weeks at the turn of the year fill Fort Kochi to the last room.

Season by season
December to February: the season. The guide rates these three months best. Rain falls on zero to two days a month, nights drop to about 21–22 °C and humidity is at its lowest of the year, around 66–71%.
March and April: hot and sticky. Days reach 34–35 °C, and in April the first storms arrive, on about seven days in the month. Keep sightseeing for mornings and evenings.
May: the turn. Rain on about eleven days and roughly 225 mm in the month; the guide advises against it.
June to August: the south-west monsoon. June is the wettest month, at roughly 600 mm over 23 rainy days, with July close behind. Days cool to about 30–31 °C, but humidity sits at 85–86%. Heavy rain interrupts the ferries and the Water Metro, so keep a road route in reserve.
September to November: a wet shoulder. The guide rates these months good, but they are not dry: September and October still bring rain on 14–16 days, about 340–360 mm, and November eases to about seven rainy days.
Temperatures and rain for each month are on the Kochi weather page.
When to go for what
Some plans in Kochi depend on the calendar more than on the weather.
Christmas and the Cochin Carnival: late December
Fort Kochi runs one long public season from the carnival's opening in mid-December to midnight on 31 December, when a giant effigy of an old man, the Pappanji, goes up in flames. Carnival finale: 31 December 2026 – 1 January 2027 (expected). The Christmas midnight mass at Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica falls inside it. Fort Kochi is full from 24 December to 1 January: book about two and a half months ahead, or stay in Ernakulam across the water. Christmas
Onam: August or September
Kerala's harvest festival: 3–15 September 2027. The official opening procession, Athachamayam, starts in Tripunithura on the city's edge, and sadya (the banana-leaf feast) is served everywhere. Onam is Kerala's great homecoming, so trains and flights fill before hotels do: book the long-distance leg early. Onam
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale: every other winter
For about a hundred days every other winter, Fort Kochi's spice warehouses and colonial godowns fill with contemporary art. Most venues are free. Allow two to three days in Fort Kochi.
Ayurveda: the monsoon
June to August is traditionally treated as the strongest season for Ayurvedic treatment, and the rain is part of the reason to come rather than a reason to stay away. Ayurveda in Kochi
The beach and the water: November to March
The guide's sea calendar marks November to March as open, April and October as rough, and May to September as closed. The same months suit the ferries and the backwaters, which heavy monsoon rain interrupts.
Malayattoor Perunnal: usually April
The St Thomas hill pilgrimage at Malayattoor peaks on the Sunday after Easter: 4 April 2027 (expected).
If you come for New Year
On 31 December the routes around Vasco da Gama Square are closed and barricaded, and the ferries and bridge roads jam just when everyone heads back. If the Pappanji is the reason for the trip, sleep in Fort Kochi; if it is not, the last week of December is the most crowded one to spend there.
