Ayurveda in Kochi

← Kochi

Ayurveda in Kochi comes in two forms that look alike from the street: a centre where a qualified physician examines you before anything is prescribed, and a spa menu of massages with Ayurvedic names. Kerala's tourism department grades centres, and its public list is the simplest way to tell them apart. This page explains how to use it, when to come and where to buy the oils; it does not give medical advice.

Ayurveda: a classified centre, not a resort spa

A first consultation with a qualified physician who examines you before anything is prescribed: that is the line between a clinic and a spa menu.

set by each centre · Year round. The monsoon months, June to August, are traditionally treated as the strongest season for treatment

A centre, not a spa

The line between the two is the first consultation. At a proper centre a physician examines you, asks about your health and only then suggests what, if anything, to do; at a spa you choose from a price list. Both exist in Kochi, often under similar signboards, but only the first is Ayurveda as Kerala's classification scheme describes it.

If you take regular medication or have a health condition, talk to your own doctor before you book, and tell the Ayurvedic physician about it. This page does not say which treatment suits anyone; that is the physician's decision.

How to check a centre

Kerala's Department of Tourism runs a classification scheme for Ayurveda centres. Use it like this:

  1. Know the grades

Ayur Diamond is the highest category, then Ayur Gold, then Ayur Silver. They replaced the older Green Leaf and Olive Leaf grades, which you will still see on signs: centres holding those certificates keep them until they expire.

  2. Look the centre up

Kerala Tourism publishes the list of classified centres and lets you filter it by district (Ernakulam for Kochi) and by grade. A classified centre is also required to call itself a Kerala Tourism Ayurveda Centre in its brochures and signage.

  3. Check the date

A classification is valid for three years from the date of the order, and the tourism department may inspect a classified centre at any time without notice. Ask to see the certificate.

  4. Remember what it is not

The tourism grade rates facilities and standards; the department itself says it does not replace the licences a centre needs from other authorities. Its checklist does require at least one qualified doctor with A-class registration from the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council, so ask who the physician is.

When to come

Centres work all year. Kerala tradition, and Kerala Tourism's own material, present the monsoon, and especially the Malayalam month of Karkidakam in July and August, as the customary season for rejuvenation programmes. Those are also Kochi's wettest months: June brings close to 600 mm of rain over more than twenty days, and heavy rain can interrupt the ferries. If the trip is mostly about the city, December to February is the dry, comfortable window; if it is mostly about a programme, the rain is part of the plan. See the best time to visit Kochi.

Oils to take home, and kalari massage

For products rather than treatment, the simplest stop is the Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala branch clinic and pharmacy on MG Road in Ernakulam. The institution behind it was founded at Kottakkal in 1902 and is run by a charitable trust; the MG Road branch sells the everyday part of its range at fixed prices: oils, herbal powders, soaps and skincare. Anything closer to treatment needs a consultation. More shops are on markets in Kochi.

Kerala's martial art has its own massage tradition. ENS Kalari at Nettoor, about 10 km south of the city centre and teaching Kalarippayattu since 1954, lists a one-month certificate course in massage alongside its combat courses: it is training to learn the technique, not a treatment.
