Onam: Kerala's ten days, and where a visitor can share them
The soul of Kerala, celebrated by everyone
Onam is Kerala's harvest festival and its biggest homecoming: ten days from Atham to Thiruvonam, when the legendary king Mahabali is said to visit his people. In 2027 Thiruvonam, the main day, falls on 12 September, and the festival opens on 3 September. Much of it happens at home, around a flower carpet and a feast on a banana leaf, but a handful of public days (a royal procession, painted tiger dancers, temple boat races) are among the best things to see in Kerala all year.
Kerala's great harvest festival: ten days when a beloved king returns to his people
The Thiruvonam star in the Malayalam month of Chingam. The Kerala government's holiday list, issued late in the year before, fixes the day.
The legend
Legend says the good asura king Mahabali once ruled Kerala. An Onam song remembers that under Maveli all people were equal.
The gods, stripped of power, turn to Vishnu, who comes to the king as Vamana, a dwarf priest.
Vamana asks for just three steps of land. The king agrees, the guest grows sky-high, and in three strides covers the whole world.
Mahabali goes down to the netherworld, but seeing his love for his people, Vamana lets him visit them once a year.
Onam is that homecoming: for Maveli's return, homes are decked with flowers and a feast is laid.

Where to celebrate
Kochi ⭐
Kochi sits inside the Onam map rather than beside it: the festival's official opening procession happens in Tripunithura on the city's own edge, and the tiger dance, the votive boat race and the big regatta are all…
What Onam looks like
Kerala keeps Onam as one state, whatever the faith: since 1961 it has been the state festival, Christians keep it too, and many Muslim families cook a sadya. The saying is atham pathonam, "ten days from Atham, and it is Onam".
On Atham, the first day, a single ring of yellow flowers appears at the door. Every morning the pookalam (flower carpet) grows by another ring, until on Thiruvonam it covers the whole doorstep in rings of colour. People buy onakkodi, new clothes, and women wear the cream kasavu sari with its gold border. On Thiruvonam the family sits down to the sadya: rice and more than two dozen dishes on a banana leaf, closed with payasam (sweet milk pudding).
The public side comes in a few fixed days. On Atham the Athachamayam procession in Tripunithura, on the edge of Kochi, is the festival's official opening. Three days after Thiruvonam, hundreds of men painted as tigers dance around Thrissur's Swaraj Round to chenda drums in Pulikali. And on the rivers the snake boats come out: the Payippad boat festival from Thiruvonam, and Aranmula's Uthrattathi race a few days after.
Where to spend Onam
Kochi sits inside the Onam map rather than beside it: almost every big public event is within about three hours by road.
Kochi and Tripunithura
The best base. Athachamayam starts and finishes at Atham Nagar in Tripunithura on Atham morning, with roads closed from early on. The Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy temple, about 10 km from central Ernakulam, is the temple most closely tied to Onam: the festival flag goes up here on Atham, and people of every faith come to its feast. Ernakulam's evenings gather on Marine Drive, and the district programme opens at the Durbar Hall grounds.
Thrissur
Pulikali on the fourth day of Onam, three days after Thiruvonam: hundreds of men painted as tigers, rolling their painted bellies to the drums around the Swaraj Round. Entirely public and free, the loudest and least solemn day of Onam. About 86 km from Kochi; there is no private parking on the Round that day, so come by train.
Aranmula
Often called Kerala's oldest boat festival, and a temple rite before it is a sport: some fifty palliyodams, snake boats held to belong to the god of the Parthasarathy temple, come down the Pamba singing before the races. Watching from the riverbank outside the pavilions is free. Nearest station Chengannur, about 10 km away.
Alleppey
Onam on the water: sadya in the backwater villages on Thiruvonam, then the three-day Payippad boat festival near Haripad, with snake-boat finals on the third day. The famous Nehru Trophy race on Punnamada Lake is a separate event with its own date in August and its own tickets.
✅ Practical tips
- Sadya — On Thiruvonam restaurants across Kerala serve a full sadya, and seatings at the better-known kitchens are booked ahead. Ask your hotel to reserve one.
- Accept invitations — If a Kerala family invites you for Onam, go: the festival happens mostly at home. Something new to wear fits the custom.
- Road closures — Athachamayam closes Tripunithura's roads from early morning, Pulikali closes the Round in Thrissur, and Aranmula has diversions from 09:00 on race day. Do transfers the day before.
- Temple boats — At Aranmula the palliyodams are sacred to the temple. Watch from the bank and follow the crowd's lead.
👣 Booking ahead
Onam is the single largest homecoming of the Kerala year, and the pressure lands on transport before it lands on rooms.
- Long-distance leg
Book trains the day the 60-day window opens. In August 2026 the Chennai–Kochi airfare rose from about ₹5,336 to about ₹14,843 around the festival.
- Rooms
About six weeks ahead for Kochi, two months for Alleppey: in 2026 its homestays filled before Thiruvonam and houseboats sold out at premium rates.
- Arrive
One clear day before Atham if you want Athachamayam; the day before Thiruvonam for Alleppey and Payippad.
