Hyderabad's best museum is the Salar Jung, one family's collection of more than 48,000 objects on the Musi river. Around it the city has a Nizam's museum with a 176-foot wardrobe, the State Museum with an Egyptian mummy, a science centre with a dinosaur dug up in Telangana, and a museum of drivable cars built from scrap. Plan around one rule: several of them close on Fridays.

Which museum, and for what

Hours and tickets for the museums with their own page are in the list above; here is what each one is for.

Salar Jung Museum: the big one

Founded in 1951 and opened by Jawaharlal Nehru, the Salar Jung Museum holds over 48,000 art objects and more than 8,000 manuscripts in about 40 galleries, from the 2nd century BCE to the 20th century: Indian, Persian, Japanese, Chinese and European art. Most of it was bought by Salar Jung III, prime minister to the seventh Nizam. The crowds gather at the marble Veiled Rebecca and at the 19th-century musical clock, whose figure strikes the hour. It is too big for one visit; pick a wing or two. Open 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:15, closed on Fridays.

The Nizam's Museum (Purani Haveli): how the Nizams lived

Set up at the wish of the seventh and last Nizam, the museum shows the gifts he received for his silver jubilee in 1937: jewelled caskets, a gold tiffin box, vintage cars. The centrepiece is the wardrobe of the sixth Nizam, 176 feet of Burma teak on two levels, once the largest walk-in wardrobe in the world. Open 10:00–17:00 except Fridays; the ticket counter closes at 16:30. It has no page of its own here yet.

Telangana State Archaeology Museum: the mummy

The State Museum is the oldest museum in Hyderabad, in an Indo-Saracenic pavilion in Public Gardens, Nampally. Most visitors come for the 2,300-year-old Egyptian mummy, now kept in a sealed oxygen-free case; around it are Buddhist and Jain sculpture, Deccan bronzes, copies of the Ajanta paintings and coins. Assembly metro station on the Red Line is next to Public Gardens. It closes on public holidays and one weekday, so check before going.

B.M. Birla Science Museum & Planetarium: with children

On Naubat Pahad hill below Birla Mandir, working since 1985. The galleries are hands-on, there is an art wing, and the dinosaurium holds the skeleton of Kotasaurus, a Jurassic sauropod found in Telangana. Planetarium shows run through the day in English, Hindi and Telugu. The centre says it is open every day, 10:30–20:00.

Sudha Cars Museum: the odd one

In Bahadurpura, the Sudha Cars Museum shows more than 250 vehicles that K. Sudhakar built, mostly from scrap, in the shape of a cricket bat, a sofa, a camera or a double-decker bus, and they all drive. Guinness World Records lists it as the largest collection of its kind. Nehru Zoological Park is a few minutes away.

Palaces you can visit like museums

Two Nizam palaces work as museums too. Chowmahalla Palace, the Nizams' official residence in the Old City, is four palaces around a shared courtyard, with a chandelier-hung main hall and collections of weapons, furniture and porcelain; open 10:00–17:00, closed on Fridays. Falaknuma Palace is a Taj hotel: non-guests get in only with a reservation, for the heritage walk or a restaurant table.

Plan around Fridays, and group by area

The Salar Jung Museum, the Nizam's Museum and Chowmahalla Palace all close on Fridays. They are also a short ride from one another in and near the Old City, so they make one day together with the Charminar. On a Friday, go to the Birla science centre or to Bahadurpura for the Sudha Cars Museum and the zoo next door, which closes on Mondays, not Fridays. The museums are also a good answer to the April–June heat, when outdoor sights are best left to early morning. With children: the Birla centre and the car museum; more ideas in Hyderabad with kids.
