Hampi

Hampi airport to the city: which airport to fly into

← Hampi

Hampi has no airport of its own. The closest is Jindal Vijayanagar (VDY), 32–40 km away, but it has only a handful of flights and they come and go. Hubballi (HBX), 145 km and 3–3.5 hours by taxi, is the reliable one. Many travellers skip both: they fly into Bengaluru or Goa and take the overnight sleeper bus or train to Hosapete, 13 km from the ruins.

Vidyanagar (VDY) or Hubballi (HBX)

Vidyanagar is only 32–40 km away but has a handful of flights and they come and go, so check before you build a trip on it. Hubballi is 145 km and 3–3.5 hours by taxi, and it is the reliable one.

From March the heat runs the day: see the ruins in the early morning and late afternoon, and rest in between.

The airports near Hampi

Three ways in by air, from the nearest to the most practical.

Jindal Vijayanagar (VDY), 32–40 km

A small airport at Toranagallu, between the JSW Vidyanagar township and the steel plant, built by Jindal Vijayanagar Steel, now JSW Steel. Its scheduled flights are regional, chiefly to Bengaluru, and few. Check the current schedule with the airline before building a trip on it. The Hyatt Place in the same township is about 35 km from the monuments.

Hubballi (HBX), 145 km

The domestic airport of Hubballi–Dharwad, with more routes than Vidyanagar. From here a taxi to Hampi takes about 3–3.5 hours and costs from about ₹3,000.

Bengaluru or Goa, then overnight

The way most people actually come. From Bengaluru, KSRTC and private sleeper buses cover the 289 km overnight in about 6.5–8 hours, from about ₹450 non-AC to about ₹1,800 for an AC sleeper, with around forty services a night. The Hampi Express leaves Bengaluru around 22:00 and reaches Hosapete about 07:30, from about ₹205–300 in sleeper. From Goa, overnight sleepers take about 7–9 hours from about ₹700; the one direct train, the Amaravati Express, does not run daily.

The last 13 km: Hosapete to Hampi

Overnight buses and trains arrive in Hosapete (Hospet); the station is described on the Hampi railway station page.

  1. By bus

Buses run the 13 km to Hampi Bazaar all day, about 30 minutes, for about ₹25.

  2. By shared auto

A shared auto-rickshaw costs about ₹20 per person on the same road.

  3. By private rickshaw

About ₹200–300 for the whole vehicle: worth it with luggage or before dawn.

How to choose

If a Vidyanagar flight fits your dates, it is the shortest way in; ask your hotel about a pickup before you fly. If not, Hubballi has more connections and a predictable taxi ride. For a trip that already passes through Bengaluru or Goa, the overnight sleeper saves a night's room and lands you in Hampi in the morning. All the routes, with times and fares, are on the how to get to Hampi page, and booking tips for flights within India in the domestic flights guide.
