Hampi railway station: how to arrive by train
There is no railway station in Hampi, and no "Hampi Junction" either. The station you need is Hosapete Junction (also spelled Hospet, code HPT), about 13 km southwest of the ruins; Karnataka Tourism names it as the nearest. From the platform it is a short bus or auto-rickshaw ride to Hampi Bazaar, and the overnight Hampi Express from Bengaluru arrives early in the morning.
Overnight sleeper to Hosapete
The way most people actually come: board in Bengaluru in the evening, sleep through the 289 km and step out among the boulders in the morning. Around forty services a night, so the seat is rarely the problem.
Best option
Hosapete (Hospet) Junction
Hampi has no station of its own; everything arrives at Hosapete, 13 km west. The Hampi Express from Bengaluru leaves around 22:00 and pulls in about 07:30.
Hosapete Junction: the station for Hampi
Hosapete (Hospet) is the working town of the district, and its junction is the railhead for the whole Hampi area. The station belongs to the South Western Railway (Hubballi division) and sits on the line between Guntakal and the Goa coast, so it gets trains from Bengaluru, Goa and Hyderabad as well as regional services.
On tickets and in apps search for Hosapete Jn (HPT). Typing "Hampi" brings up the Hampi Express, the train, not a station.
If you arrive late or leave early, Royal Orchid Central Kireeti, a chain hotel, is about five minutes' walk from the station. Hampi itself is 13 km away.
Trains to Hosapete
Times and fares below are approximate; schedules change, so check the current timetable on NTES or IRCTC before you plan around a train.
From Bengaluru: Hampi Express, nightly
The classic way in, and it runs daily. The train runs between Mysuru and Hubballi and stops at both KSR Bengaluru and Yesvantpur, so check which one is on your ticket. In the current NTES timetable it leaves KSR Bengaluru at about 21:50 and reaches Hosapete at about 07:00, a little over 9 hours; sleeper class from approx. ₹205–300.
From Goa: daytime trains, not daily
Several trains run from Madgaon (Goa) to Hosapete, among them the Amaravati Express, but none runs every day; the trip takes about 7.5 hours by day, and the sleeper class starts at approx. ₹250. On days without a train, the overnight sleeper bus from Goa is the usual alternative.
From Hyderabad and elsewhere
Hosapete also has trains from Hyderabad towards Hubballi and the Goa coast, plus regional trains from Ballari and Hubballi. Search by station code HPT.
From the station to Hampi
The last 13 km take about half an hour.
- Local bus, the cheap way
Buses run from Hosapete to Hampi Bazaar all day, about ₹25. Hampi's bus stop is at the bazaar, a few minutes from the Virupaksha Temple, so the "Hampi bus stand" people search for is that stop, not a separate terminal.
- Shared auto
Around ₹20 a seat; it leaves when full.
- Private rickshaw
About ₹200–300 for the whole vehicle. Worth it with luggage or before dawn, when the buses have not started. Agree the price and the drop point (bazaar, Kamalapura or the river crossing) before you get in.
Good to know
Staying across the river? The guesthouses of Virupapur Gaddi and Anegundi are reached by motorboat from near the bazaar, roughly 07:00–17:30, about ₹50–100 a person, cash only. Arriving on the morning train leaves plenty of time; arriving after dark does not. In the monsoon, when the river rises, the boats stop and the far bank is a 25 km detour over the Anegundi bridge.
Coming by bus instead? Most people actually do: overnight KSRTC and private sleepers from Bengaluru take about 6.5–8 hours and also arrive in Hosapete. More options are on the how to get there page.
