Domestic flights in India
Flying inside India is cheap, frequent and the obvious choice for long distances: Delhi to Kochi is 40+ hours by train and about 3.5 hours by air. Foreign nationals show their original passport at the terminal door; DigiYatra face boarding is not open to foreign passports yet. Plan on one 7 kg cabin bag, checked baggage that depends on the fare, and two hours at the airport.
Who flies where
The domestic market is dominated by two groups. Shares below are from DGCA monthly data for mid-2026, as reported in the press.
IndiGo
The largest airline, with roughly two-thirds of domestic passengers. Low-cost: seat selection, meals and extra baggage are paid add-ons.
Air India
The full-service carrier of the Tata group, merged with Vistara in November 2024. Checked baggage is included in all its economy fares (15 to 25 kg depending on the fare).
Air India Express
The group's low-cost airline, merged with AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India) in October 2024.
Akasa Air
The third-largest airline by domestic passengers, low-cost.
SpiceJet and regional airlines
SpiceJet's share has shrunk to a few per cent. Regional carriers such as Alliance Air, Star Air and Fly91 cover smaller airports; check their schedules close to the date, as they change more often.
👣 How to buy a ticket
Buying a domestic ticket is the same as anywhere: an aggregator to compare, the airline to book.
- Compare on an aggregator
MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, ixigo and similar show all airlines side by side. Fares usually climb in the last days before departure and in holiday seasons.
- Book directly when you can
Changes, refunds and disruptions are easier to sort out with the airline itself. Foreign cards usually go through on airline sites, but not always; an aggregator is the fallback.
- Enter your name exactly as in the passport
The passport is your ID at the airport, so the spelling has to match.
- Read the fare conditions
Cheapest fares can be cabin-bag-only or non-refundable. Adding a bag online before the flight costs less than paying at the airport.
- Check in online
Web check-in opens in the airline app or website; save the boarding pass as a PDF or in the app.
Baggage: the usual economy allowances
Allowances depend on the airline and the fare, and they are revised. These are the published standard rules for economy on domestic flights; always check your own booking.
| Cabin bag, IndiGo | One bag up to 7 kg and 115 cm in total (55×35×25 cm), plus one personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag up to 3 kg. |
| Checked bag, IndiGo | 15 kg on standard domestic fares. The cheapest Lite fare includes no checked baggage. |
| Cabin bag, Air India | 7 kg in economy, up to 55×40×20 cm (115 cm in total), plus a small personal item that fits under the seat. |
| Checked bag, Air India | Economy Value 15 kg, Classic 20 kg, Flex 25 kg. |
| Excess | Pre-booking extra kilos online is cheaper than paying at the counter. |
Power banks
Power banks and spare lithium batteries travel only in the cabin, never in checked baggage, and airlines such as Air India forbid putting them in the overhead bin: keep them in the seat pocket or under the seat in front. Under a DGCA advisory of January 2026 (as reported in the press), using a power bank on board is banned, including charging a phone from it. If a device gets hot or smokes, tell the crew at once.
Documents at the airport
For foreign nationals: the original passport is the only accepted photo ID on domestic flights. Photocopies, scans and foreign driving licences are not accepted. At the terminal door a CISF (airport security force) officer checks your passport against the ticket or boarding pass, on paper or on the phone; the same passport is checked again at security and at the gate.
Keep the passport and visa together for the whole trip: hotels register foreign guests by passport too, so a domestic flight is not the day to leave it in a safe.
DigiYatra: face scan instead of documents
DigiYatra is the government-backed system that lets passengers pass the terminal entry, security and boarding gate by face scan, with separate fast lanes at large airports. Enrolment is in the DigiYatra app and currently works through Aadhaar (the Indian national ID), so foreign passport holders cannot enrol yet.
Passport-based enrolment is on the way: according to press reports (September 2026), trials with e-passports for international departures are planned for October to December 2026 at Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi and Mumbai. Until it opens for domestic flights, use the regular lanes with your passport. The regular lane is slower at peak hours, which is one more reason to arrive on time.
How much time to allow
The airport routine in India takes longer than the flight on short routes. Airlines recommend arriving two hours before a domestic departure.
| Arrive | 2 hours before departure. At Delhi, ticketed passengers are let into the terminal no earlier than 4 hours before a domestic flight. |
| Check-in counter closes | 60 minutes before departure (IndiGo); arriving later means denied boarding. |
| Boarding gate closes | 25 minutes before departure (IndiGo). |
| Winter fog | In December and January fog in Delhi and across north India often delays and cancels flights, especially early in the day. Choose afternoon departures and leave wide gaps between connections. |
| Getting to the airport | City traffic is the least predictable part. Add a buffer for the ride, especially in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi at rush hour. |
When the train is the better choice
Count door to door. A short flight still means a ride to an airport far from the centre, two hours before departure, the flight itself and the trip back into town. On routes like Delhi–Agra or Delhi–Jaipur a fast day train (Shatabdi, Vande Bharat) goes from station to station in the city centre and usually wins on time and money.
An overnight train in 2A (two-tier AC sleeper) replaces both a night in a hotel and half a day of travel, and the slow scroll of fields and stations at dawn is part of the country you came to see. Fly when the train takes a day or more (Delhi–Kochi, Delhi–Goa, Kolkata–Bengaluru), when the waitlist on the train is deep, or when you are short of days. Train classes, quotas and booking are covered in the transport guide.
❓ Questions people ask
