Fireflies in Goa: a few weeks before the monsoon

Abscondita spp. / Lampyridae

In Goa the fireflies' courtship displays peak from late May to mid-June, the last weeks before the monsoon breaks. The guide records them in the Ghat interior, around Chorla Ghat and near Netravali, with a chance on a dark evening at Sahakari Spice Farm. Go after full dark and far from any lamp; no date or place guarantees a display, and there are fewer fireflies than there used to be.

Go out after full dark, away from any lamp, in the last weeks before the rains. Whole trees pulse on and off together.

A narrow window

The season is short: late May to mid-June, the weeks before the rains set in, and it shifts a little with the monsoon each year. This is the opposite of Goa's tourist calendar. The beach season is over, and from June to September the sea is under an official red-flag advisory, with swimming and watersports closed. For fireflies, that is the point: the show belongs to the inland forest, not the coast.

What you are waiting for is a whole tree flashing at once. In the Western Ghats thousands of fireflies gather in single trees for a few weeks and pulse on and off together; some species are told apart by their courtship flash patterns, and the light is how males and females find each other.

Where, and the problem of the drive back

  • Chorla Ghat: the forested pass 50–60 km north-east of Panjim where Goa meets Karnataka and Maharashtra. The guide marks fireflies here as seasonal. The catch: the hairpin road is best not driven after dark, and fireflies only show after dark. Plan a firefly evening at Chorla so that you do not have to drive the hairpins down in the dark.
  • Netravali: in the far south-east around the Budbudyanchi Tali, about 80 km from Panjim, also seasonal, and the drive back to the coast at night is a long one.
  • Sahakari Spice Farm: the plantation in Ponda is a matter of luck on a dark evening rather than a dedicated site.

Chorla Ghat and Netravali are on the Sahyadri edge, the same Western Ghats hills where firefly season has become an organised event near Pune; more on that on the fireflies page.

✅ How to watch without harming them

Light is the whole language of fireflies, and artificial light drowns it out.

  • No torches, no phone flash — Keep screens dark and headlights off where you stop. Give your eyes time to adjust.
  • Stay on the path — Females lay their eggs on or just below the ground, and in some species the females do not fly.
  • Do not catch them — Over-collection is one of the threats researchers list for fireflies, and unmanaged firefly tourism is another.

Fewer than there used to be

According to the guide, naturalists in Goa recall that twenty years ago fireflies flashed in large numbers around villages every monsoon and even flew into houses. Lights and habitat loss have thinned them since. That matches the wider picture: habitat loss, light pollution and pesticide use are among the threats researchers list for fireflies worldwide. More of Goa's wildlife calendar, from nesting turtles to gliding frogs, is on animals of Goa.
