Rajasthan Festival: the state’s birthday week in Jaipur
Army bands and folk troupes filling the Pink City's squares for the state's birthday
The Rajasthan Festival is the state’s foundation-day celebration, Rajasthan Diwas, run by the state’s tourism and culture departments as a week of events across Rajasthan with the largest programme in Jaipur. Since 2025 the day has followed the Hindu new year, Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, instead of 30 March, so the dates move every year: next 2–7 April 2027 (expected). It is a bonus if you are in Jaipur that week rather than a reason to plan a trip.
The Rajasthan government fixes the day by the Hindu calendar; the week's programme is announced in March, a few days to two weeks ahead.
The legend
Before independence the land was Rajputana, a patchwork of princely states. Rajasthan, the place of kings, was made from 19 of them.
The merger came in seven phases, from the Matsya Union in 1948 to the final reorganisation of 1956.
On 30 March 1949 Jodhpur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner joined Greater Rajasthan; Vallabhbhai Patel was closely involved.
That became Rajasthan Day. Since 2025 it is marked on the Hindu new year, Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, so the date moves each year.

True or myth
❌ Myth. Since 2025 it follows Chaitra Shukla Pratipada: in 2026 that was 19 March.
✅ True. The Matsya Union came first in 1948; the last step was the reorganisation of 1956.
✅ True. It was named so because many kings ruled here before independence.
What is being celebrated, and why the date moves
Before independence the land was Rajputana, a patchwork of princely states; Rajasthan, “the place of kings”, was made from 19 of them. The merger came in seven phases, from the Matsya Union in 1948 to the reorganisation of 1956. The decisive step was 30 March 1949, when Jodhpur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner joined to form Greater Rajasthan, with Vallabhbhai Patel closely involved, and that date became Rajasthan Day.
According to press reports, since 2025 the state government has marked the foundation day on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the Hindu new year, which falls in March or early April. The week of events ends on that day. The government fixes the day by the Hindu calendar, and the week’s programme is announced in March, from a few days to two weeks ahead.
What happens in Jaipur
Rajasthan Tourism describes days packed from morning chants to musical evenings: concerts, religious chants, film screenings, music nights, an army pageant, a police tattoo show, a heritage fashion show and a grand closing ceremony, the peak of the week.
The venues are the city’s monuments and arts centres. Past editions have put chari dance and puppet shows at Jal Mahal, tribal dance and folk song at Albert Hall, and ravanhattha (a bowed string instrument of western Rajasthan) and khartal (wooden clappers) at Amber Fort. At Shilpgram in the Jawahar Kala Kendra, dishes of Mewar, Marwar, Dhundhar, Hadoti and Braj are served to folk music, next to a craft bazaar of textiles, prints, embroidery, carpets, pottery, metal and woodwork from across the state.
In a recent edition the culture department also ran three days of events at state monuments, including Amber, Nahargarh, Hawa Mahal and Albert Hall, and Jawahar Kala Kendra held exhibitions, concerts, theatre and an art fair. Programmes change every year, so check the announcement in March.
Planning the week
- Watch for the March announcement — Venues and times appear only shortly before the week; Rajasthan Tourism’s fairs and festivals page and the state culture department are the places to check.
- Weather — Jaipur in March averages highs around 32°C, April around 38°C and almost no rain: the evening events are the comfortable ones.
- Gangaur follows — Jaipur’s Gangaur, with its procession from the City Palace, comes soon after: 9–10 April 2027.
- Where to stay — Most venues are in or near the walled city and around Albert Hall. See where to stay in Jaipur and festivals in Jaipur.
