Independence Day in Kolkata: the parade, the lights, the history
At the stroke of midnight, India awoke to freedom
Kolkata marks Independence Day with West Bengal’s state parade on Red Road beside the Maidan in the morning and the Victoria Memorial and Howrah Bridge lit in the tricolour after dark. The city also has its own story of the first one: on 15 August 1947 Gandhi was not in Delhi but in a house in Beliaghata, fasting for peace. Next: 15 August 2027.
Kolkata's Independence Day is the state parade on Red Road beside the Maidan, with a march-past and tableaux, and the Victoria Memorial and Howrah Bridge lit in the tricolour around the 15th.
Where to watch
Red Road: the state's main ceremony. The Chief Minister hoists the flag and inspects the guard of honour, then police contingents, cultural troupes and tableaux pass (11 tableaux in 2026). Beside the Maidan in central Kolkata.
Victoria Memorial: lit in the tricolour through the Har Ghar Tiranga days, with a flag hoisting and visitor activities on the 15th. The galleries are closed on Independence Day; the gardens stay open (6:00–18:00, garden ticket ₹30, 2026).

Calcutta, 15 August 1947
In August 1947 Calcutta was torn by communal riots. Gandhi, on his way to Noakhali, stayed on at the request of Muslim friends and moved into Hyderi Manzil (Haidari Mansion) at 150 Beliaghata Main Road on 13 August. On 15 August, while the rest of the country celebrated, he observed a fast; people came to see him all day, and Muslims keeping the Ramzan fast waited outside to break it only after seeing him. The calm that followed was called the miracle of Calcutta. When riots returned on 1 September he began an indefinite fast and ended it only after written assurances of peace. It was his last visit to the city. The house is now Gandhi Bhawan.
How to spend the day
Everything in the morning and evening is in central Kolkata, around the Maidan.
- Morning: Red Road
The state ceremony has recently started at about 10:30 and lasted about an hour: the Chief Minister hoists the flag and inspects the guard of honour, then police contingents, cultural troupes and tableaux pass. Esplanade, Park Street and Maidan stations on the Blue Line of the metro are the closest.
- Midday: a freedom-movement museum
The Alipore Jail Museum, in the former jail that held Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose and C. R. Das, opens from midday. Netaji Bhawan, the house Bose escaped from in 1941, is another option; check whether either opens on the holiday before going.
- Late afternoon: the Maidan’s edges
The Victoria Memorial galleries close on Independence Day, but the gardens stay open, and there is a flag hoisting there on the 15th. The Shaheed Minar on the Esplanade side was rededicated in 1969 to the martyrs of the freedom movement.
- After dark: the lights
Howrah Bridge in tricolour light is best seen from the riverbank at Mullick Ghat; the Victoria Memorial is lit too, seen from outside the gates on the Maidan side.
Monsoon on the day
15 August is the middle of the monsoon in Kolkata: around 32°C by day, 27°C at night, rain on about 17 days of the month and high humidity. Carry an umbrella, keep walks short and stay around Park Street, Chowringhee or Esplanade. Rooms are easy at this quiet time of year; trains fill earlier when the 15th makes a long weekend.
