A massive marble palace in Mughal style with British elements. Paid entrance, with a museum of the colonial era inside; tickets can be booked online in advance and that is the way to skip the queue. Even from outside it's impressive, especially at sunset when the white marble turns golden. The monument stands as a grand reminder of Kolkata's role as the former seat of British power in India, with its pristine white marble contrasting sharply against the city's weathered character elsewhere.
