Netaji Bhawan
AreaElgin Road / Bhowanipore
A family house of 1909 on Elgin Road, remembered above all for one January night in 1941, when Subhas Chandra Bose slipped out of British house arrest dressed as a Pathan. The Netaji Research Bureau has run it as a museum since 1961: his rooms and papers are kept as they were, and the German Wanderer that carried him away that night still stands downstairs, which is a stranger thing to see in person than any photograph suggests. Open 11:00 to 18:00, closed Mondays.
The house Bose escaped from in 1941, with the getaway car still parked inside
