Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) in Hyderabad
A festival of devotion, charity and community
Eid al-Adha, known in India as Bakrid or Eid-ul-Azha, is the second of the two great Islamic festivals, and in Hyderabad it begins with morning prayers across the city, the largest at the Mir Alam Eidgah, followed by a day of family visits and shared meals. Next date: 17 May 2027; the day is fixed by the sighting of the crescent and can move by a day. For visitors it is a family festival more than a public spectacle.
Hyderabad's Eid al-Adha is a morning at the Mir Alam Eidgah, where close to a lakh pray together, then a day of visits, new clothes and festive sweets in the Old City around Charminar.
Where to watch
Mir Alam Eidgah, Bahadurpura: the city's largest Eid congregation, close to a lakh in 2026, led by the Khateeb of the Mecca Masjid. An open prayer ground; traffic is diverted around it in the morning, and anyone not praying watches from the edges, not the rows.
Mecca Masjid, Charminar: the 17th-century mosque beside Charminar, with its own Eid prayer. Working mosque: come after the prayer, dressed modestly.
Charminar and Laad Bazaar: the Old City's festive streets, with bangles, attar and clothes in the days before and families out in new clothes after the prayer.
Old City sweets and chai: double ka meetha and qubani ka meetha, the bread and apricot desserts of Hyderabadi feasts, and Irani cafés around Charminar for chai with Osmania biscuits.

What Eid al-Adha marks
Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, honours the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. It falls on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, at the climax of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, and the celebrations continue over the following three days.
Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the festival moves about eleven days earlier each year. The date depends on sighting the new crescent of Dhu al-Hijjah about ten days before; the central government lists a tentative date, which can shift by a day. How the day runs in Hyderabad
- Early morning: neighbourhood prayers
The Eid prayer is said after sunrise and before midday, followed by a sermon (khutbah). In Hyderabad, grounds, stadiums, function halls and Eidgahs across the city hold congregations, the earliest from about 6:00; the published list comes out in the days before.
- Mid-morning: Mir Alam Eidgah
The city's largest congregation, at Bahadurpura, is led by the Khateeb of the Mecca Masjid. Roads around it are closed for the morning; anyone not praying watches from the edges, not the rows.
- After the prayer: qurbani and sharing
Families who can afford it then offer an animal sacrifice, qurbani. The meat is traditionally divided into three: a third for the household, a third for relatives and neighbours, a third for those in need. It is a private, family act; the municipal corporation runs extra sanitation work around the festival.
- The rest of the day
Families in new clothes visit one another and serve festive sweets. In the evening, families come out around Charminar and Laad Bazaar.
Visiting respectfully
- Greet with "Eid Mubarak" — It is always warmly received. Ask before photographing anyone, especially at prayers.
- Dress modestly — Dress modestly near Eidgahs and mosques, and visit the Mecca Masjid after the prayer, not during it.
- Expect closures — Many shops and eateries in the Old City close for the morning prayers and family visits.
- Livestock markets — Animal markets are held in the days before Bakrid. Visitors who would rather not see them can simply avoid them; respect the neighbourhood's celebrations either way.
- If invited home, accept — An invitation for Bakrid is a real honour, and the welcome matters more than anything on the table.
- Crowds — The UK government advises taking particular care during periods of religious significance such as Eid, and avoiding large gatherings at religious sites; follow police traffic diversions in the morning.
