Dev Deepawali in Varanasi: how to see the night of lamps

Eighty-four ghats, and a clay lamp on every step for the gods

In Varanasi Dev Deepawali means one evening: the Kartik full moon, 24 November 2026, when lamps are lit on the steps of every ghat. The festival days around it, 21–24 November 2026, are the time to arrive and settle in. The two decisions that matter are made well ahead: a room in the old city near the river and a place in a boat, because the full line of lamps is only visible from the water.

The heaviest bathing day of the Kartik month

All the ghats from Assi to Rajghat

Day 5, evening

The steps of every ghat along the river (from Ravidas Ghat in the south to Rajghat in the north, some eighty-odd ghats over about six kilometres) are lit with more than a million earthen lamps. The Ganga aarti is performed at several ghats at once, lamps are floated on the water, and at Dashashwamedh and Rajendra Prasad ghats the armed forces lay wreaths at the Amar Jawan Jyoti for the war dead

The full sweep of the Varanasi riverfront

Where to watch: steps or water

From the ghats you see the lamps up close: rows of clay diyas along every step, people placing them, lamps floated on the water. Walk the riverfront from Assi northwards as the light goes; the crowd spreads along the whole line rather than standing at one point, so the stretches between the named ghats keep some room.

Dashashwamedh Ghat is the centre of the evening, with the Ganga aarti and the tribute to fallen soldiers. Its steps fill hours before dusk, so if you want to watch the aarti from land, come early and stay put. At the northern end, Namo Ghat is where the official evening opened with the first lamp at a recent edition, and Panchganga Ghat has the akash deep lanterns raised on tall poles through the month of Kartik.

From a boat you see what the steps cannot show: the whole six-kilometre curve of lamps at once, from Ravidas Ghat to Raj Ghat. Most visitors do both: an hour on foot before dusk, then the river.

Booking a boat

Boats are the first thing to sell out. On ordinary evenings a shared seat for the aarti costs approximately ₹150–300 and a private rowing boat approximately ₹800–1,500 an hour; on Dev Deepawali prices are far higher. More on the options: boat rides in Varanasi.

  • Book early — Riverfront rooms and boats go weeks or months ahead; book the boat together with the room.
  • Settle the terms on the bank — Agree the price, the start time and how long the ride lasts before you step in.
  • Check the rules for the year — The district administration usually announces the boat rules by October; ask your boatman or hotel whether they apply to your boat.
  • Ask about life jackets — The UK Foreign Office notes that tourist boats in India rarely carry life-saving equipment. Ask before you board.

Getting there and moving on the night

Lal Bahadur Shastri airport at Babatpur is about 27 km from the ghats and Varanasi Cantt railway station about 6 km, by the Ministry of Tourism's figures. Trains sell out fast in this season, so book the day sales open, 60 days before travel. Arrive about three days before the full moon: the city fills, and on the evening the lanes towards the river close to vehicles.

The old city between Assi and the ghats further north is best walked in any case: its lanes are too narrow for cars. On the night, e-rickshaws and cars stop well short of the river and the last stretch is on foot; allow much longer than usual for it, and longer still for the way back after the lamps. Details: getting around Varanasi and how to get to Varanasi.

Where to stay

Stay in the old city near the river: a guesthouse in the lanes above the ghats between Assi and Dashashwamedh means you walk to the water and back, which on this night is the only reliable way. Cantonment hotels are closer to the station and the airport road, but on the festival evening the lanes to the river are closed to vehicles. Plan four nights at least, five for a calmer day after; more on areas: where to stay in Varanasi.

Ganga Mahotsav and the days around

In the days before the full moon Uttar Pradesh Tourism holds Ganga Mahotsav on the riverfront: concerts of classical music, a country-boat race and a crafts fair; the craft bazaar, with artisans from more than 20 states, runs for ten days at Urban Haat by Chowka Ghat. The quiet mornings of the festival days are good for Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, and for Ramnagar Fort across the river. The daily evening aarti, held on all other nights too: Ganga aarti in Varanasi.

Crowds and safety

The UK Foreign Office advises extra care at major religious festivals, says stampedes have happened at large religious gatherings, and recommends following the advice of local authorities. On this night that means keeping to the barricaded routes and one-way walks the police set up, not stopping on narrow steps, and agreeing a meeting point in case you are separated. The emergency number in India is 112. More: safety in Varanasi.
