Auroville's birthday: a silent bonfire at dawn

A fire before sunrise, with people standing around it in silence

Auroville marks its founding day, 28 February, with a bonfire at dawn in the amphitheatre beside the Matrimandir: residents and guests sit around the fire in silence from before first light until after sunrise. Next: 28 February 2027. Guests are welcome, but bags, phones and cameras are not allowed, and the Matrimandir team sends out the entry arrangements a few days before.

The date is fixed; the Matrimandir team announces the entry arrangements on auroville.org a few days before (silence; no phones, cameras or bags), and in some years, as in 2021, the bonfire is closed to the public.

The legend

🌅

In 1964 the Sri Aurobindo Society in Puducherry resolved to build a city devoted to his vision, with Mirra Alfassa, known as the Mother, at its head.

🏜️

About 20 square kilometres of desertified plateau, 10 km north of Puducherry, were chosen for the city.

🏺

On 28 February 1968 over 5,000 people came to the opening. Envoys of 124 countries and 24 Indian states poured handfuls of home soil into a marble urn.

📻

The Mother read the Auroville Charter in French from her room at the Ashram, carried by All India Radio. Then the Charter was read in 16 languages.

🔥

Ever since, Auroville has greeted each birthday dawn by a fire: thousands stand in silence in the amphitheatre as the sun rises over the Matrimandir.

Customs

Dawn bonfire

The fire is lit in the amphitheatre beside the Matrimandir before sunrise, and people gather round it in silence. Some years it is streamed live.

The lotus urn

The white marble lotus-shaped urn holding the soil of all the nations stands at the very heart of the amphitheatre.

Silence

Silence is always kept inside the Matrimandir, and the grounds around it are called the Peace Area.

Festive weeks

Weeks of exhibitions and installations surround the birthday: in 2019, from 21 February to 8 March, there was an art camp, a tango festival and a choir concert.

Amphitheatre music

For the 58th birthday in 2026 the percussionist A. Sivamani played in the Matrimandir amphitheatre.

True or myth

The Mother stood by the urn at Auroville's opening.

❌ Myth. She stayed in her room at the Ashram in Puducherry, and her voice reading the Charter was carried by radio.

On opening day the Charter was read in 16 languages.

✅ True. After the Mother's voice, the Charter was read in 16 languages, with soil placed in the urn during the readings.

Auroville's name points both to dawn and to Sri Aurobindo.

✅ True. Aurore is French for dawn and ville for town, and the city is also named after Sri Aurobindo.

How the dawn bonfire runs

A large fire is built at the centre of the amphitheatre, the open space next to the Matrimandir and the great banyan tree that the Mother chose as the geographical centre of the city. At the heart of the amphitheatre stands a white marble urn in the shape of a lotus, holding the soil brought to the inauguration in 1968.

By Auroville's own description, entry is through the Second Banyan Gate from 4:00, guests are expected to be seated by 4:45, the gate is closed from 5:00 to 5:45, and the gathering generally runs from 4:45 to about 6:30. Nothing is performed: people sit in complete silence, there are flower arrangements and recordings are played, and the sun comes up over the Matrimandir towards the end. The same dawn fire is lit on Sri Aurobindo's birthday, 15 August, and on 29 February in leap years.

The date never moves, but the arrangements can: in some years the bonfire has been closed to the public, and some years it is streamed live. In some years exhibitions, concerts and other events have also been held in the weeks around the birthday.

Rules for guests

These come from Auroville's page on the dawn gatherings; read the Matrimandir team's announcement for the year, sent out a few days before.

  • No bags or devices — Bags, phones, cameras, tablets and other recording devices are not allowed in the Park of Unity, the Matrimandir gardens or the amphitheatre.
  • Leave things behind — Leave belongings at your guesthouse or in your vehicle, or at the custody facility near the parking area outside the Park of Unity; the management is not responsible for theft or damage there.
  • Be on time — The gate opens at 4:00; be seated by 4:45, because the gate is closed from 5:00 to 5:45.

Why 28 February

On 28 February 1968 Auroville was inaugurated on a desertified plateau about 10 km north of Puducherry. More than 5,000 people came, and representatives of 124 nations and of Indian states placed handfuls of soil from their homelands in the urn. The Mother, Mirra Alfassa, did not come to the site: she read the Auroville Charter in French from her room at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry, carried by All India Radio, and the Charter was then read in 16 languages. Its first point is that Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. The name comes from French aurore, dawn, and ville, town, and also honours Sri Aurobindo, which is why the city's day begins with a fire at sunrise.

Getting there before dawn

The hard part is arriving at 4 am. Inside Auroville the lanes are red dirt with no street lighting, there is no public transport, and ride-hailing apps do not work in the township.

  1. Stay inside Auroville

A guesthouse in Auroville puts you closest to the gate; see budget stays in Auroville and book early for this date.

  2. From Puducherry

Book a taxi the day before for the 10–12 km ride; a taxi costs roughly ₹400–600. Auroville's community taxi services are booked by phone, not by app.

  3. Make a few days of it

Auroville itself takes days rather than hours, and the winter brings other Puducherry festivals: the International Yoga Festival in early January and Masi Magam, usually in February or March.
