Masi Magam in Puducherry: temple gods taken to the sea

Temple gods carried into the sea at first light to the sound of drums

Masi Magam is the day the Magha star (Magam in Tamil) meets the full moon of the Tamil month of Masi, held highly auspicious in temples across the south. In Puducherry and Karaikal it is the day of the theerthavari, the ritual bath: deities from temples across the territory and the neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu are carried to the sea at first light, to drums and chanting. Next: 21 February 2027 (expected).

The legend

⭐

Masi Magam is the day the Magam star falls on the full moon of the Tamil month of Masi, held highly auspicious in temples across the south.

In Kumbakonam people bathe in the sacred Mahamaham tank that day, while in Puducherry the temple gods are carried to the sea.

The sea becomes a place of renewal: after the gods, people step into the waves and pray for absolution, prosperity and their ancestors' blessing.

Customs

Gods to the sea

Deities dressed in flowers and silk are carried to the shore at the fishing village of Vaithikuppam to drums and chanting.

Fair by the water

On the beach vendors sell peacock feathers, jackfruit, watermelon and buttermilk against the heat.

What you see on the beach

The procession ends at Vaithikuppam, a fishing village on Puducherry's shore. Deities dressed in flowers and silk are carried through the streets to the sea, and thousands of devotees walk with them. At the water the gods are given their bath in the waves, and then people step in after them to pray for absolution, prosperity and their ancestors' blessing.

For the morning the shore becomes a fairground: stalls under banana-leaf canopies, drummers and folk performers, and vendors selling peacock feathers, jackfruit, watermelon and buttermilk against the heat, which rises quickly with the crowd. Most visitors come to Puducherry for its French quarter; on this one morning the Tamil town and its temples take over the same coast.

What Masi Magam means

Masi falls in February to March. Astronomically, the day is the full moon in the Magha nakshatra (lunar mansion), in the sign of Leo, with the sun opposite in Aquarius. Temple deities across Tamil country are taken to a tank, a river or the sea for their bath on this day.

The best-known observance is at Kumbakonam, where pilgrims bathe in the Mahamaham tank. Once every twelve years, when Jupiter is in Leo, it becomes the Mahamaham, often called the southern counterpart of the Kumbh Mela. By the Kumbakonam legend, the pot (kumbha) holding the seeds of creation came to rest there after the cosmic flood, and Shiva broke it with an arrow; its contents became the tank.

The exact day can differ by place. When the Magha star runs from one morning into the next, Tamil Nadu temples keep the first day and the Puducherry sea procession often takes place on the second, so the date here may be a day after the Tamil Nadu calendars.

Practical tips

The procession is free and open to all. It is one morning, so it suits a stay in Puducherry rather than a trip of its own.

  • Check the schedule locally — The day follows the Tamil almanac, and the temples announce the procession schedule about a week before. Come at first light.
  • Watch from the side — Give way to the palanquins and the priests, and ask before photographing rituals up close. Dress modestly if you join the crowd at the water.
  • Heat and crowds — Bring water and a hat. The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) notes that stampedes have occurred at large religious gatherings; agree a meeting point and keep valuables close. Emergency number: 112.
