Budget hotels and hostels in Auroville
Auroville has no backpacker hostel strip. Cheap beds here are simple community guest houses, booked through Auroville's own Guest Accommodation Service, plus the Mitra Youth Hostel for students, interns and volunteers staying five days or more. In Pondicherry, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram runs modest guest houses meant for visitors to the Ashram. Book early for December to February.

How staying in Auroville works
Auroville's registered guest houses are booked through the Guest Accommodation Service, upstairs at the Visitors Centre, or on its website, guesthouses.auroville.org. Prices vary with the facilities, services and level of comfort; each guest house's page lists meals, kitchen, fan or AC and the minimum stay. Besides guest houses, the service lists residential stays, where you live with an Aurovilian household.
It matters whether a guest house is registered with Auroville. Other guest houses around the township have no connection with the project, and guests there may find it hard to get an Aurocard or to use Auroville facilities and events, which are normally reserved for people staying in official Auroville accommodation. Registered guest houses also include the daily guest contribution in their price and issue the Aurocard.
Wherever you stay, every guest, Indian or foreign, must register their arrival within 24 hours on an Arrival Report form, filled in at the guest house.
Budget stays in the catalogue
The three listed above, plus the cheapest Ashram option in Pondicherry.
Auroville Guest Accommodation Service
Not a guest house but the official booking desk for Auroville's community-run guest houses and residential stays. Start here if you want something simple and central and do not know the communities yet; tell them your dates, budget and whether you want a kitchen or meals.
Atithi Griha Guest House
One of the best-known budget stays inside the township, in the Bharat Nivas area about 0.5 km from the Matrimandir. Rooms are in South Indian style, with fan and AC, attached bathrooms with hot water and internet in each room; breakfast is included. There is no guest kitchen and dinner costs extra. Minimum stay one night.
Mitra Youth Hostel
Auroville's own youth hostel, in the Bliss community near the Town Hall, about 0.5 km from the Matrimandir, in a building by the architect Anupama Kundoo. It is for students, trainees, interns, young adults on long stays and volunteers, with a minimum stay of five days: singles with attached bathrooms, shared rooms and dorms, fans rather than AC, breakfast, Wi-Fi and a kitchen for tea and coffee only. Bookings are by WhatsApp or email, Monday to Saturday.
Cottage Guest House, Sri Aurobindo Ashram (Pondicherry)
A smaller Ashram guest house, one of the three that can register foreign visitors, on Rangapillai Street in central Pondicherry. Ashram guest houses are meant for visitors to the Ashram, not for tourists looking for a cheap room: no TVs, phones or Wi-Fi in rooms, no room service, strict rules on cleanliness and conduct, and at most houses the gates close at 10:30 pm. Only three Ashram houses, Park, Cottage and New Guest House, are authorised to register foreigners with the Foreigners' Registration Office.
When and how to book
From December through February Auroville's guest houses are usually fully booked well in advance, because those are the cool, mostly dry months; book early. In the off season, March to November, a few days ahead is often enough. If you plan to volunteer, sort out the stay together with the placement: see volunteering in Auroville, where Sadhana Forest's free dormitory huts for working volunteers are also covered. A bicycle can usually be arranged through your guest house, and you will need one: see bike rental. For all price levels, see where to stay.
