Places to visit near Auroville

← Auroville

The closest and easiest day out from Auroville is Pondicherry, 10–12 km south, with its French quarter, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the seafront promenade. Further afield are two pieces of Tamil history, the Pallava monuments of Mamallapuram on the coast road to Chennai and the hill fort of Gingee, while Tirumala and Bangalore are trips of several days rather than outings.

Tirumala

Up on the Seven Hills of Tirumala stands the temple of Venkateswara, the most-visited shrine in the world, where pilgrims queue for a moment's darshan and offer their hair in thanks. Devotion at a scale found nowhere else.

Bengaluru

India's tech capital keeps its older selves in plain sight: a rock-cut cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, and the market lanes of Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Filter coffee and dosa at dawn, craft beer and bookshops after dark, and a plateau climate that stays mild all year.

Pondicherry: the nearest day out

Pondicherry (Puducherry) was the chief French settlement in India from the late 17th century, and the old town is still divided by a canal into the French Quarter and the Tamil Quarter.

  • The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, on Rue de la Marine, is the Ashram Auroville does not have: it shares the vision of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, but it is a separate organisation.
  • The seafront. Promenade Beach along Goubert Avenue is lined with heritage buildings, among them the French War Memorial, the 19th-century lighthouse and Le Café, a 1790 building that was once the port office. The sandy beach itself has largely been lost to erosion.
  • Food. The heritage dining rooms of White Town and the Tamil quarter are covered in where to eat and cafés.

Getting there. From Auroville a taxi costs approximately ₹400–600 and an auto-rickshaw ₹250–400. Auroville's own bus runs to Pondicherry at several times a day and comes back about three hours later; passes are sold at the Financial Service offices. If you want to stay in town, the Ashram's guest houses are described under budget stays.

Temples and forts: Mamallapuram and Gingee

For either, a taxi with driver for the day is the simple option; agree the fare beforehand.

Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the coast about 60 km south of Chennai, on the same East Coast Road that brings most travellers to Auroville. The group of monuments was built under the Pallava kings in the 7th and 8th centuries: monolithic ratha temples carved from single rocks, cave temples with scenes from the Mahabharata, structural stone temples and one of the largest open-air rock reliefs in the world, the Descent of the Ganges, also called Arjuna's Penance. The Archaeological Survey of India manages the site. If you arrive from Chennai by road, it is the natural stop on the way.

Gingee Fort (Senji)

Inland in Villupuram district, close to the Puducherry border, Gingee is one of Tamil Nadu's great surviving forts. Three hills, Krishnagiri, Rajagiri and Chakilidurg, each have their own citadel and are joined by walls about 13 km long enclosing some 11 km². Inside are a seven-storey Kalyana Mahal, granaries, a temple to the goddess Chenjiamman and an Archaeological Survey of India site museum at the entrance. The fort passed in turn to the Bijapur sultans, the Marathas, the Mughals, the French and the British.

If you are based in Pondicherry: Auroville as the day trip

Many people do it the other way round and come up to Auroville for a few hours. Auroville suggests starting at the Visitors Centre, collecting the free pass for the Matrimandir Viewing Point, and, with a full day, joining a one-hour guided cycle tour from the Visitors Centre. Things that run on set days are worth timing: the free Eco Film Club at Sadhana Forest on Fridays, visits by appointment at the Botanical Gardens and Pitchandikulam Forest, and the workshops. Repos Beach is about 8 km east of the Visitors Centre; there are no lifeguards. Going inside the Matrimandir needs a booking days ahead and does not fit a spontaneous day trip.

Longer trips: Tirumala and Bangalore

The nearest cities in the India GO guide are a long way off, and the distances in the list above are straight-line ones; by road they are longer.

  • Tirumala, about 190 km as the crow flies, is the hill temple of Venkateswara, one of the most visited shrines in the world: a pilgrimage in its own right rather than an outing.
  • Bangalore, about 260 km as the crow flies, is reachable by road or by air: Puducherry's small airport has direct flights to Bangalore; check the current schedule with the airline.

For most other routes, the practical gateway is Chennai, 150–160 km up the coast road. See how to get there.
