Auroville's cafés are daytime places: croissants from early morning, coffee and long lunches, and many close by late afternoon. The choice comes down to what you want: serious coffee, a bakery, a garden café in the forest or a farm lunch. Inside the township you pay with an Aurocard, except at the Visitors Centre.

How to choose a café in Auroville

Nearly all the cafés in the township are vegetarian with a large vegan menu, and most sit at ₹–₹₹.

For coffee: Marc's Cafe

Marc's roasts single-estate beans from organic South Indian plantations in small batches. Mornings bring croissants, grilled sourdough and house kombucha, served in a leafy courtyard. It is at the pricier end of the range.

For bread and pastries: Auroville Bakery, Bread & Chocolate

Auroville Bakery, by Douceur on the Auroville Main Road near Kuilapalayam, has hot croissants from 7 am, then buns, baguettes, quiche and tarts; breads and cakes come out in the afternoon, and the best things go early. It is closed on Sundays and has a second outlet with a restaurant at the Town Hall. Bread & Chocolate, a women-run café near the Visitors Centre, is the place for sourdough breakfasts: a tofu scramble on house bread, or a vegan affogato with coconut ice cream.

For a long lunch in a garden: Naturellement, Terrassen

Naturellement Garden Cafe sits deep in the forest at Udyogam, near the Verite community, with a farm-to-table kitchen, an in-house bakery, courtyard and rooftop seating and a children's play area. It is known for desserts, the lemon tart and its own ice creams; it opens for breakfast and lunch and closes on Mondays. Terrassen Cafe, by the forest since 2015, is fully vegetarian with a big vegan menu, from bagels and salads to millet and ragi chocolate cake.

For a farm lunch: Solitude Farm Cafe

Krishna McKenzie's permaculture farm serves what it grows: a daily thali of local millets, heritage rice, seasonal curries and salads with wild greens and edible flowers. It is a lunch place rather than a coffee stop, and it pairs well with the Saturday farm tour.

At the Visitors Centre: Dreamer's Cafe

Dreamer's is an upcycled shipping container in the middle of the Visitors Centre, with seating outdoors. It serves wood-fired pizza, hummus platters, fresh juices, shakes and South Indian dishes: the easy stop before or after the Matrimandir Viewing Point. Right Path Café at the Visitors Centre is the other option there.

Before you go: hours, payment, Wi-Fi

Hours. Cafés here keep daytime hours: several close by late afternoon and some take a weekly day off, so check the place card before cycling across the township.

Payment. Auroville aims to keep cash out of the township, and people eating at cafés and restaurants there are expected to pay by Aurocard or an Auroville account; the Visitors Centre is the exception. Guests get an Aurocard at their guest house or at the Financial Service offices at the Town Hall and at Pour Tous. More on where to eat.

Working from a café. Many eateries and guest houses have Wi-Fi; Naturellement lists it on its official page. For a longer stay, ask your guest house for Auroville's weekly News & Notes, which lists talks, classes and events.

Cafés in Pondicherry

Three cafés in the list are in Pondicherry, 10–12 km south:

  • Cafe des Arts in White Town, in a restored Franco-Tamil house that is half art gallery, with a leafy garden, crêpes, waffles and coffee, and free Wi-Fi.
  • Le Café on Rock Beach, run by the tourism corporation in a 1790 building that was once the port office: filter coffee and cold coffee facing the Bay of Bengal, with simple breakfasts and sandwiches.
  • Baker Street, a French bakery known for butter and almond croissants, éclairs, tarts and quiches. Come by mid-morning, before the best pastries sell out.
