Vrindavan itinerary for one to three days
Vrindavan runs on temple hours, not on distances: the town is small, but Banke Bihari closes in the middle of the day, the first aarti of the day is at 04:30 and the ghats come alive at dusk. Plan the day around those clocks and one day covers the essentials, two let you walk the parikrama and see the old stone temples, and a third takes you to Radha's Barsana.
👣 Day 1: the essentials
If you have one day, this is it. The old-town core is walked: nothing on wheels fits in the lanes around Banke Bihari.
- Morning: Banke Bihari at opening
Banke Bihari opens at 07:45 in summer (roughly March–October) and 08:45 in winter, and closes at midday. A curtain is drawn across the deity every minute or two, so Krishna is seen in flashes. The last 300 metres are on foot for everyone.
- Late morning: Nidhivan and the Goswami temples
Walk to Nidhivan, the grove where the rasa lila is believed to have taken place, then to Radha Raman, whose Krishna is held to have emerged by itself from a shalagrama stone, and the courtyard of Radha Damodar (1542), with the rooms where Prabhupada lived from 1959 to 1965.
- Late afternoon: Madan Mohan
Climb to Madan Mohan (1580), the oldest temple still standing in Vrindavan, on a mound above a bend the Yamuna has since left. The late light over the rooftops is worth the climb.
- Dusk: Keshi Ghat, then Prem Mandir
Sit by the river at Keshi Ghat, where Krishna is said to have defeated the demon Keshi, with the sandstone Jugal Kishore temple (1627) beside the river steps. End at Prem Mandir, white marble with an evening light show.
👣 Day 2: dawn, the parikrama and the stone temples
- 04:30: mangala aarti at ISKCON
The first service of the day at the Krishna-Balaram Mandir of ISKCON Vrindavan: curtains open before dawn, lamps, conch and drums, and half an hour of singing together. The temple opens around 04:00.
- Or at first light: the parikrama
The Vrindavan parikrama is a 10–11 km clockwise loop around the old town past Madan Mohan, Kaliya Ghat and the Yamuna ghats. Start between 05:00 and 06:30, before the heat and traffic; most people begin and end at Keshi Ghat.
- Midday, while Banke Bihari is shut: museum and monuments
The free Braj Culture Museum near ISKCON (working days, roughly 10:30–16:00) makes sense of everything else in town. Then the Dravidian gateways of the Rangji temple (1851) and the restored sandstone tank of Brahma Kund beside it, the vaulted hall of Govind Dev (1590), and the twisted marble pillars of Shahji Temple (1876).
- Before sunset: Tatiya Sthan
Tatiya Sthan, a walled grove with no electricity, where sadhus sing slow dhrupad bhajans in the evening. Phones away, silence, and simply sit. Shop in Loi Bazar afterwards, but not on a Wednesday, when its shops usually close.
Day 3: out of town
Pick one; each needs a car with a driver. More options in day trips from Vrindavan.
Barsana, Radha's town (about 45 km)
The Radha Rani temple on Bhanugarh hill, by steps or by the ropeway, which is not always running; the shaded forest walk of Gahvar Van below; Prem Sarovar on the road to Nandgaon. Go on a weekday morning, not at Lathmar Holi or Radha Ashtami.
Bhandirvan, across the Yamuna (about 15 km)
The banyan under which tradition places the wedding of Radha and Krishna, in flat farmland and near-total quiet. Go in the morning; facilities are basic.
Elephants or birds on the Agra side
The Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre, by prior appointment only, with guided sessions and no rides. Or, from November to February at dawn, the Jodhpur Jhal wetland, where sarus cranes stalk the shallows.
Weekends, festivals and heat
At weekends and on festivals the town seizes up and cars are turned back: park outside and continue by e-rickshaw or on foot. Holi and Janmashtami bring the biggest crowds and a real crush risk at the temples. October to March is the comfortable season; from April to June avoid the middle of the day.
