Panchganga & Alamgir

The Quiet North

← Varanasi

Panchganga Ghat below the Alamgir mosque, old mahallas, century-old wrestlers' akharas. Barely any tourists, just morning light and the authentic city.

The north tourists never reach: Panchganga Ghat where five invisible rivers meet, Aurangzeb's mosque above the water, maharajas' palaces slowly crumbling. Mornings bring only pilgrims and laundry; the light is soft, the steps bare. Half an hour north of the burning ghat, Varanasi shows the face it had before postcards.
