Temples and rituals

Darshan itself costs nothing; you pay only to skip the queue, to attend a booked aarti or to have a puja performed. Book these only on the temple's official website, shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in, which shows the price after you log in with a mobile number.

General darshan at Mahakaleshwar: free

The common queue can take hours on Mondays and festival days.

Sheeghra Darshan (fast-track): paid

A ticket that lets you skip the long queue, sold on the temple's site after logging in with a mobile number. Approximately ₹200–250 according to the guide's data, not confirmed by the temple; check the current price on the official portal.

Bhasma aarti: registration

Regular booking opens on the 1st of the previous month at 08:00, Tatkal booking one day before at 08:00. The temple's own price list: General Puja ₹100, Shiv Mahimn Path ₹200, Rudrabhishek Vaidik Puja ₹300, Shiv Mahimn Strot ₹500, Rudrabhishek (11 Avartan) Rudra Patha ₹1,000. Each of these needs a separate Sheeghra Darshan ticket.

Offerings outside other temples

At Kal Bhairav, vendors at the gate sell small cups and bottles of liquor for the offering at roughly ₹20–100. Flower and sweet plates for Mahakaleshwar are sold all along the approach.

Getting around: autos and taxis

Autos have no meters, so name the price before you sit down.

Auto, station to Mahakal: about ₹40–100

A whole day of temples with one driver (Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav, Sandipani, Mangalnath, Ram Ghat) runs about ₹800–1,000.

Shared e-rickshaw: about ₹10–20 a seat

Cheaper and quieter for short hops around the temple quarter.

Chintaman Ganesh by auto: about ₹200–300

Return trip from the centre, including about 30 minutes of waiting.

Taxi: about ₹1,200–1,800 half day, ₹2,000–3,000 full day

Worth it for a day out to Omkareshwar or Indore; in town an auto is faster. Uber and Ola work, but cars are few.

Food and rooms

Food can cost nothing. The Mahakaleshwar Annakshetra, run by the temple committee, serves free meals of dal, rice, roti, a vegetable and one sweet every day from 11:00 to 19:30, with coupons issued by the committee.

Rooms span a wide range. The cheapest beds are in pilgrim dharamshalas and the temple committee's own Atithi Niwas guest houses; Madhya Pradesh Tourism hotels sit in the middle; Anjushree and Rudraksh Club & Resort are the top end. Current room prices are shown with the hotels on the where to stay and budget hotels pages.

Festivals change everything. Room prices rise moderately for the Shravan Mondays, sharply for Mahashivratri, severely for Nag Panchami and to an extreme degree in a Simhastha year, when the city's own rooms are a fraction of the crowd.

Sights beyond the temples

Mahakal Lok, Vikram Teela and its Singhasan Battisi sculptures, Bhartrihari Caves and the riverside shrines are free. The Vedh Shala observatory and the Triveni Museum charge a small ticket, considerably higher for foreign nationals. The cable car up Dewas Tekri, about 40 km away, costs roughly ₹83 return. Naulakhi Eco Tourism Park charges a nominal fee per person and a separate one for vehicles.
