Budget hotels and hostels in Ujjain
Ujjain is a pilgrim city, so its cheap beds are mostly dharamshalas and simple hotels rather than hostels. For a dorm there is essentially one backpacker hostel; for a private room, a simple hotel in the old city or the state-run MPT Avantika. Pilgrim lodges by the temple, including the temple committee's own, are the other low-cost option.

Four kinds of cheap bed
The hotels in the list above, and the pilgrim lodges that fill the same niche.
Hostel: Spiritual Backpackers
The rare hostel in a city built around pilgrim lodging: simple dorm beds, some private rooms and a common area.
Simple hotel by the temples: Hotel Shreegopal
A simple, inexpensive hotel in central Ujjain, within walking distance of Mahakaleshwar, the old city and the main bazaar.
State-run hotel: MPT Avantika
Run by Madhya Pradesh Tourism, by the Nanakheda bus stand about 2 km from the railway station. A state-run hotel at a budget price.
Pilgrim lodges: dharamshalas and temple guest houses
Low-cost beds near Mahakal. Shri Hatkeshwar Dham Bhakta Niwas, about 550 m from the temple, has two- and four-bed rooms with or without AC and a ten-bed hall; Mahakal Dharmshala has rooms and dormitories. The temple committee runs two Atithi Niwas guest houses (Annakshetra on Shaktipath, and by Harsiddhi Square), with AC rooms from approx. ₹1,000 and non-AC doubles from approx. ₹600 a night on its official tariff; the ISKCON guest house is booked on the temple's own site. Old city or station: which side to choose
The old city around Mahakaleshwar, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat is the place to be if the trip is about darshan. The Bhasma Aarti starts at 4:00, and on festival days vehicles are held at outer car parks, so a room you can walk from saves the most time. Hotel Shreegopal and the dharamshalas are here.
Freeganj, near the railway station, has more choice and is where the night trains arrive; the station is about 2 km from the temple. MPT Avantika is near the Nanakheda bus stand, about 2 km from the station.
Indore, about 55 km away, is the fallback when Ujjain is full, but it adds a road trip on the busiest days. For the full picture, including mid-range hotels, see where to stay in Ujjain.
Before you book
A few things that catch budget travellers out in Ujjain.
- Festival dates fill first — Rooms for the Mondays of Shravan (19 July – 30 August 2027, expected), Nag Panchami (6 August 2027, expected) and Maha Shivaratri (6 March 2027) go early; for Shivaratri, book about six weeks ahead. In a Simhastha year Ujjain's own rooms are a fraction of the crowd.
- Book temple rooms only on official sites — The temple committee's rooms are booked on its own services portal. Police have shut down fake sites that took payment for them.
- Read the house rules — Pilgrim lodges have their own rules. The ISKCON guest house's booking terms, for example, do not admit unmarried couples, accept only government ID (passport, Aadhaar, driving licence), allow no non-vegetarian or outside food, smoking or alcohol, and do not accept cancellations less than two days before check-in; check-in is at 10:00 and check-out at 09:00.
- Plan the 4 a.m. ride — If you stay away from the temple, arrange the early ride to the Bhasma Aarti through the hotel the evening before; autos do run at night near the station, but with a surcharge and not always where you are staying. See getting around Ujjain.
