How to reach Ujjain

← Ujjain

The simplest way to reach Ujjain is an overnight train to Ujjain Junction, which stands about two kilometres from Mahakaleshwar. The city has no airport of its own: flights land at Indore, about 53 km away, and the last stretch is by taxi, bus or a short train. Overnight AC buses from Delhi cover the same ground when the trains are full.

Ujjain Junction (UJN)

The station sits two kilometres from Mahakaleshwar, and the night trains land in the morning, which is exactly how the city is meant to be entered.

Best option

Indore airport (IDR), 55 km away

Ujjain has no airport of its own; Indore takes flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and the last stretch is an hour and a half of road.

Overnight Volvo from Delhi

AC sleepers leave between five and eleven in the evening and arrive in the morning: the same logic as the train, and available when the train is sold out.

Simhastha 2028 runs 27 March to 27 May: for those two months the city's ordinary transport logic does not apply.

By train: the usual way in

Ujjain Junction (code UJN) is on the Western Railway zone, and the temple committee lists express and superfast links with Indore, Bhopal, Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Varanasi, Patna and Amritsar.

  • From Delhi: the Malwa Express leaves New Delhi in the evening, about 15 hours, all classes. Sleeper is roughly ₹500–600, 3AC roughly ₹1,300–1,500.
  • From Mumbai: the daily Avantika Express, about 12 hours, sleeper from roughly ₹455.
  • From Bhopal: frequent trains over about 180 km, 2.5–3.5 hours, seats from roughly ₹100.

The overnight trains arrive in the morning, so you can go straight to the temple quarter. Bookings open 60 days ahead and the Delhi and Mumbai sleepers sell out first; book on IRCTC, which shows the real availability without an agent's markup. For trains from elsewhere, including Hyderabad and Kolkata, check direct services and changes at Bhopal or Indore on IRCTC. Station details are on the railway station page.

By air: fly to Indore

The nearest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore. The district administration puts it 53 km from Ujjain, and the temple committee lists flights from cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Hyderabad; check current routes with the airlines. From the terminal there are three ways on:

  • Taxi: about 1.5 hours and roughly ₹1,000–1,500. Prebooked transfers and Uber Intercity start around ₹1,000; arrange one in advance for a night landing.
  • Bus from Indore: every 15–30 minutes, about 2 hours, roughly ₹100–150.
  • Train Indore Jn – Ujjain Jn: the cheapest, from about ₹50, 1–1.5 hours.

More on the transfer is on the airport page.

By road and bus

Regular buses connect Ujjain with Indore, Bhopal, Ratlam, Gwalior, Mandu, Dhar, Kota and Omkareshwar. From Delhi, overnight Volvo AC sleepers booked through the aggregators take about 13 hours and cost roughly ₹850–1,700.

Road distances given by the district administration: Indore 53 km, Bhopal 183 km, Ahmedabad 402 km, Gwalior 451 km, Khajuraho 570 km, Mumbai 655 km and Delhi 774 km; the temple committee adds Jaipur at about 510 km.

Timing your arrival

Ujjain's calendar decides how easy the arrival is.

  • Arranging the 4 a.m. ride — For the bhasma aarti at 04:00, book the ride through your hotel the evening before. Autos do work near the station at night, but with a surcharge.
  • Sawari Mondays — On the Mondays of Shravan and Bhadrapada (19 July – 30 August 2027, expected) the Mahakal procession closes much of the old city to vehicles from late morning. Arrive the day before and plan to walk.
  • Simhastha — During the Simhastha (27 March – 27 May 2028, expected) the city's ordinary transport logic does not apply. Arrive at least four days early, plan to move on foot, and treat Indore as the practical base.
  • Festival trains — For Mahashivratri (6 March 2027) book trains or the flight to Indore as soon as sales open.

From the station to the temple

Autos are the everyday transport, without meters: agree the price before you sit down, roughly ₹40–100 from the station to Mahakal. The last stretch to the temple through Mahakal Lok is on foot by design. Getting about town is covered on the getting around page.
