Udupi temple dress code

← Udupi

At the Sri Krishna Matha men remove their shirts before entering the inner temple, now at every darshan hour, not only during certain pujas. Jeans, T-shirts, sleeveless outfits, short dresses and other non-traditional clothing are refused for men and women alike, and Bermuda shorts are not allowed either, so come in modest traditional dress.

Sri Krishna Matha: what the rules say

The temple is run by the eight mathas in turn, each for a two-year Paryaya term, and the dress code is announced by the matha in charge. Under the latest directive reported by the press, the shirt rule, which used to apply only during certain pujas, now covers the whole day. Staff and security check clothing at the entry points, and notices are posted at the entrances. Be dressed before you reach the Maha Dwara, the main entrance on the east side. The rules can change when the temple passes to the next matha (17–18 January 2028, expected), so read the notices at the gate.

  • Men — Shirt off before the inner temple, at any hour; a shawl may be worn over the shoulders once the shirt is off. Bermuda shorts are not allowed.
  • Women — Modest, traditional dress. Half skirts and Bermuda shorts are not allowed.
  • Refused for everyone — Jeans, T-shirts, sleeveless outfits, short dresses and any other non-traditional clothing.
  • Footwear and photos — Footwear is left outside. For photography, phones and bags, follow the notices and the staff at the entrance.

What to pack for a temple day

Traditional clothes are the safe choice. For men, for example, a plain dhoti or loose cotton trousers and a shawl: the shirt comes off and is carried, and the temple allows a shawl over the shoulders. For women, for example, a salwar kameez or a saree with a dupatta to cover the shoulders. Slip-on sandals save time, because footwear comes off at the temples listed below. If you go to the sea or to Manipal later the same day, change after the temple rather than before.

Inside the Krishna Matha

The deity is seen through a window rather than face to face: the inner Navagraha Kindi with its nine openings and, on the west wall, the Kanakana Kindi tied to the poet-saint Kanakadasa. The free meal (annadana) is part of the same visit: you sit on the floor in a row and eat from a banana leaf, so clothing you can sit cross-legged in is the practical choice. More on the meal: prasadam in Udupi.
