Anantheshwara Temple

← Udupi

AreaCar Street area, Udupi

A low tiled roof and a sanctum sheathed in copper: coastal building at its plainest, and one of the oldest temples still standing in Tulu Nadu. Generally dated to the 8th century under the Alupas, and by tradition older still. Though it stands a few steps from the Krishna Matha, Udupi's monastic story really begins here: Madhvacharya, who founded the Dvaita school, studied in this compound under Achyutapreksha and took his vows in it. A Chandramouleshwara shrine of similar age shares the enclosure. Entry is free, footwear stays outside, men are usually asked to remove upper garments in the inner area, and photography inside is restricted.

The temple where Madhvacharya took his vows, older and quieter than the Krishna Matha next door
