Animals in Rishikesh
Rhesus macaque
The two footbridges over the Ganga are the busiest macaque ground in Rishikesh. Troops there work the railings and the shopfronts, and have learned exactly what a food packet looks like.
Macaca mulatta
Northern plains grey langur
Named for Hanuman and rarely harmed anywhere in north India, which is the main reason it survives inside towns at all.
Semnopithecus entellus
Asian elephant
Ganesha's animal, and the reason the corridors between Rajaji and Corbett are legally protected: the herds have used them for far longer than the roads have existed.
Elephas maximus
Golden mahseer
Fish in temple stretches of the Ganga are protected by custom: they are fed and never caught, which is why the shoals there are visible at all.
Tor putitora
Indian leopard
The 27 km road to Neelkanth runs through the core of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, where a 2024 study estimated about 24 leopards per 100 km², one of the highest leopard densities recorded.
Panthera pardus fusca
